Holiday excitement rises as Athena and nearby celebrate with church programs at Baptist and Christian churches and a Christmas pageant at the Athena school. A tree, Santa, and multiple musical and dramatic performances promise a festive weekend for families and the community.
Reverend E. M. Bollinger died December 10 in Clarkston Washington after a period of illness. He had resigned his Clarkston pastorate last May and traveled with his wife to the East before returning to Clarkston for the fall. Funeral plans awaited Mrs Bollinger who was in Syracuse New York with their daughter.
Alice Don will join Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Edgerton of Walla Walla after Christmas to make her home with the couple. The child is described as beautiful and brilliant and loved by all who know her. The Edgertons are kind, have an attractive home, and no other children.
Weston Leader reports Crescent chapter conducted officer elections with positions filled by chapter members. Results highlight new leadership and planned activities for the coming term.
Friends of Mrs Sam Pambrun report she is ill at home south of Athena and is slightly improved at present.
Federal Judge William Clark of New Jersey ruled the adoption of the eighteenth amendment invalid arguing ratification requires constitutional conventions not state legislatures. In New Jersey arrests for retail intoxicants would shift to the state enforcement act pending appeal. Officials fear effects on prohibition prosecutions if upheld.
Two deer fought with locked antlers on Hammer Creek. One animal died, the other, a four pointer, was alive and later freed by ranch workers at the Raymond ranch after officers pried apart the horns. Mrs. E. B. Knox photographed the scene.
Fifteen more Oregon counties are to be accredited as tuberculin free areas for dairy and range inspection, says Dr. W. H. Lytle state veterinarian. They include Lane Jackson Deschutes Crook Klamath on Wallows Umatilla Morrow Baker Malheur Wasco Clackamas and Curry.
Mr and Mrs W J Crabill will spend the holidays with relatives and friends in the Willamette valley. Grandma Sleeman will go to her brother’s home at Dayton for Christmas.

A Klamath Falls jury found Donald Nacker, 21, guilty of murder in the first degree for shooting Fred Dunbar at Summit Lake on September 1. The panel, in eight minutes, recommended life imprisonment. Sentencing to be set this week before Judge G F Skipworth, with Deputy DA Ted R Gillenwaters seeking the death penalty in the principal argument.
Milton pioneer and justice of the peace J L Miller died at his Milton home Friday after a stroke. A 60 year valley resident and 1872 Milton settler born in Illinois in 1860, he managed a flour mill and was active in fraternal work. His wife had died in 1929 and one brother survives. Funeral services were held Sunday.
Bryce Baker of the Athena Service Station says Conoco programs may air on KSL Salt Lake City Tuesdays 6 to 6 20 p m and on KGA Spokane Fridays 7 to 7 30 p m The Press previously named Butte as the sending station in error.
At Bend on Monday two young daughters of Mr and Mrs Fred E McDaniel aged 1 and 3 died in a house fire. After tucking them in the mother left for a neighbor. flames broke out and firemen reached the bedroom but the children had already perished in their sleep according to physicians.
Mrs Chase Garfield hosted the Athena Bridge Club on Third Street last Friday. Four tables entertained with holly and candles. Mrs Glenn Dudley won high score. Mrs F B LeGrow took consolation. Mrs Gordon Watkins earned the guest prize. Tea and cakes were served by Mrs Eager.
Rev. E. H. Harris of Okanogan Washington will preach Sunday morning at the Baptist church. He is en route home from a visit at McMinnville Oregon.
Four Athena students at the University of Oregon are enrolled this fall. Lois Lorene Johnson, a music sophomore and Athena high school graduate, belongs to Gamma Phi Beta and Mu Phi Epsilon. Lenore McNair, Athens high school graduate, is a business sophomore and Alpha Delta Pi member. Fred A. Radtke, history junior and 1927 Athena high graduate, fenced in 1929. Kathleen Mae Radtke, English junior and Alpha Delta Pi member, is an Athena high graduate.
McKenzie Chapter C E S installed officers for the year at the Masonic hall with Mrs. W P Littlejohn as installing officer. New officers include Mrs Chase Garfield as worthy matron Arthur Coppock as worthy patron Mrs Marion Hansell associate matron Kohler Betts associate patron and others. A social hour followed with refreshments on tiny tables lit by red tapers and miniature candles.
The C D O club hosted a hard times themed evening at Forest Zerba residence with a no hostess dinner for fifty. The event featured a dance by Belva McIntyre piano solos by Mrs Floyd Pinkerton vocal by Marjorie Montague and prizes to Mrs Lee Crawford and Sterling Parris for best sustained characters. Next meeting set for Mra Jess Smith’s home on Friday January 2.
Mrs Flint Johns Mrs A A Mc Intyre and Miss Mary Berlin entertained the Primary department of the Christian Sunday School Saturday afternoon. Children worked on scrapbooks to send to unfortunate youngsters. The feature of the affair was the party served by the hostesses.
Dinner guests included Gee and Mrs. Clifford Walker visiting Mrs. Walker’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Morris, on Sunday.
The grade schools stage The End of the Santa Claus Trail in the school auditorium next Tuesday night December 23. Miss Lee directs acting, Miss Bryant handles singing, and Miss Thorson costumes. The high school orchestra debuts under Mr Tilley, and the Glee club, led by Mrs Bloom, performs Christmas carols.
Pendleton coach Miller led both squads as the junior game stayed tight, Pendleton juniors edging Cramer's juniors 11 to 10. The Pendleton first team, praised as the best in years, beat Athena High 28 to 6. Athena High prepares to face Weston High January 7 at Weston. Athena teams also won practice games against Walla Walla YMCA squads in Walla Walla.
One of the warmest basketball games this season unfolds tomorrow night in the Athena gym as Athena Athletic league meets Weston Independents. Weston, once mulling a Blue Mountain league entry, is described as well trained and scrappy, ready to go.
Mr. and Mrs. Max Hopper hosted a Wednesday dinner with twelve covers. Chrysanthemums and red tapers decorated the table. Dr. R. D. Blatchford won high score in bridge, Justin Harwood had the low score. Members present included Dr. and Mrs. Blatchford, Mr. and Mrs. Justin Harwood, Dr. and Mrs. Rice, Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Prestleye, and Mr. and Mrs. James Lieuallen.
The Wauna Camp Fire group was entertained Monday evening at Mrs. W S Ferguson home. The hostess taught the girls how to decorate talcum powder jars and other attractive articles are being made. The next meeting will be at Mrs. Bert Logsdon’s home with a Christmas tree loaded with gifts.
Hundreds of Portland motorists traveled to Mt Hood resorts Sunday to enjoy six inches of fresh snow. A bright sunny day drew crowds of winter sports fans and enthusiasts to the area.
The Athena Athletics beat the Pendleton Kiwanis 48 to 29 on Pendleton court in the Blue Mountain League season opener. Wayne Pinkerton and Art Taylor sparked the attack, with 15 and 12 points respectively, as Athena led 24 19 at half. Art Taylor suffered a cheek cut but remained in play. They next face Weston Independents at Athena gym and then Adams on Friday December 26.
Members and their husbands enjoyed a progressive dinner Thursday night starting at W. E. Campbell home then to the homes of Mr. and Mrs. Jenkins, Mr. and Mrs. Montague, and Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Smith. Four tables played at the Smith home with high scores earned by Mrs. Jenkins and C. H. Potter, now going to Mrs. Montague and Mr. Phillip Remillard.
The Athena Methodist Ladies Society hosted a biweekly meeting at Mrs. Frank Little s home with Christmas decorations and a three act play The Gold Diggers Christmas Club The cast included Mrs Will Kirk Mrs Frank Williams Mrs Welton Read and others Refreshments were served and gifts exchanged A solo by Mrs Hand accompanied the event Visitors names are listed including Mrs Henry Booker and Mrs F B Boyd
M Bowers a farmer from the Walla Walla valley was detained by Buck Lievallen, a trade officer, and brought to court. Judge Richards fined him 25 dollars for hauling cattle from Pendleton to Walla Walla without the required Oregon license and ordered compliance with the law.
The Athena high school faculty was entertained Tuesday night at the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Blatchford. Eight guests dined beneath a miniature Christmas tree with red tapers. Miss Mary Cameron won honors in bridge. Mrs. Ed Bloom received consolation.
Mr and Mrs Jacob Booker from Bonners Ferry Idaho arrived Wednesday and will spend the holidays with relatives, joining local kin for the season.
Ellis A. Yost, chief examiner of the Federal Radio Commission, urged increasing the nation's high power stations from ten to over fifty and to permit all clear channel stations to operate at 50,000 watts. He also proposed renewing licenses for six months after January 31, 1931, a move opposed by two commissioners.
Jones of Athena and Misa Tucker of Toppenish were united in marriage at Dayton Washington on December 10. Vernon O Harra and his wife hosted a reception at their home Saturday evening with many gifts for the newlyweds. The bride's parents are Trajon Tucker, and J E Jones and his wife are the groom's parents. they plan to reside on the Jones mountain ranch.
Ernestine Iicksen a 16 year old Hermiston girl was killed when a car driven by Walter Norquist of Hermiston turned over ten miles west of Pendleton late Sunday night. Norquist swerved on the wrong side of the road and the car skidded onto its side. Iicksen sat beside the door in the front seat and was crushed by the door edge as the vehicle overturned. Four other occupants escaped serious injury.
The Girls' League of Athena high school plans a silver tea tomorrow afternoon at Mrs Arthur Douglas home to honor mothers. The program from 2 pm to 4 pm includes piano solos by Marjorie Montague Esther Berlin vocal duet by Marjorie Douglas and Betty Eager and a musical reading by Betty Eager.
Mrs Archie McIntyre entertained the J T club at her home last Friday afternoon. A sociable afternoon was spent by the members with the hostess serving dainty refreshments at the tea hour. The next meeting will be at Mrs Max Hopper's home on January 9.
