The annual meeting of the Umatilla County Caledonian Society was held in this city Monday with the election of officers for the ensuing year. John Bell was chosen president, H. A. Barrett vice president, James Henderson secretary, and W. E. Potts treasurer. The retiring secretary Barrett was honored with a watch fob for three years of service. A special meeting set for January 8 will decide on observing Barns birthday January 26. Also noted: James Ritchey plans to move from Weston holdings to the Willamette Valley near Corne linus, buying a 12 acre farm at $500 per acre to grow fruit and berries and dairy, per the Weston Leader.
Mrs Myrtle Harrison nee Wall aged 30 died Tuesday morning at 0 30 oclock at her parents home in the city after suffering tuberculosis for years. She married Mr Harrison and lived in Arizona Pendleton and Port Townsend before settling with her railroad husband at Vancouver Washington. Services were held at the family home conducted by Rev Harris and the remains sent to Pendleton for interment at Olvey cemetery. She leaves her parents four brothers and a large circle of friends.
In Athens Friday evening Company L C N G Pendleton defeated Athena High School 9 to 5 in a lively basketball game. Pendleton trailed at halftime 3 to 5 but surged in the second half led by Coomans Parker and Dadiey to secure the four point win amid a large crowd. Postgame, the High School faculty hosted a reception with music and games, praising the visiting squad and noting the sport's staying power in Athena.
John Vert of Pendleton faced Judge Wolverton in Portland US court for conspiracy in government land gains and paid a $5,000 fine. Reports mention larger fines for others, with Belts of Vilot Rock named in a land fraud suit and possible transfer of land back to Uncle Law. The proceeding was part of a broader land dispute overview. Athena Commercial Association held an interesting meeting with visitors, social activities, refreshments, and a musical quartet.
County school principals and assistants met in Pendleton to begin forming a county league for literary and athletic events with plans for an annual Heldmest. A committee on canalization and by laws was named and a January 8 meeting set to advance the plan with Pendleton hosting the first gathering.
Mrs Joseph Rainville was declared insane and committed to Salem asylum. Her mind deranged last week with prior episodes noted. Violent behavior developed. husband moved her to Pendleton after the attack. She has children in Obamawa with relatives caring for two young ones.
The annual stag supper hosted by the Methodist Episcopal church drew a full house in the church basement. Mr T B Beverly officiated as toastmaster while Mayor Mow Ewen and Henry Koepke spoke on civic topics. Edward Koontz managed the hospitality and a reception and ball are planned for December 29 in Pendleton by the local organizations.
