Santa Claus and decorated trees to be seen at three Athena churches tonight Christmas Eve. Programs include music song and cheer with Methodist and Baptist services featuring recitations solos and congregational carols plus selections from sacred cantata Bethlehem and a Christmas story at each church.
A church program features Poplar Trees by Helen Russell Revitation A King Come Down by Mildred Winship songs Bells of Christmas Tide by a choir recitations by Jessie McEwen The Little Light Bearers by Tobed McFadden’s class What the Star Saw by Thelma McEwen address Rev Driver and Rev Ryder leads prayer distribution of presents from the tree God Be With You Till We Meet Again in the program.
Miss Jennie May Hyatt married William B. Hall son of Mr and Mrs S G Price at the Hyatt home. Rev Payne of A B church Weston officiated with Myrtle Hyatt and Mina Nettie Hyatt in attendance. The couple to reside on the Bryson homestead after the ceremony with many Weston mountain residents sending gifts.
In a Saturday evening game at the opera house Columbia College from Pendleton lost to Athena High School by a narrow margin amid praises for sharp tackler shooting. The home squad showed strong floor work and clever plays but failed to convert enough chances. Referees Mr Steel of Walla Walla and J B Keefe of Weston officiated. The 2nd quarterly conference of the M E church will be held at 4 pm January 1 with Rev Gabriel Sykes preaching January 2.
A runaway freight without its engine, carrying caboose and 26 loaded cars, plummeted down a canyon from Kamela summit toward Pendleton. Five stock shippers aboard the caboose escaped as cars leaped rails. one cow died. Sixteen cars destroyed, losses run into thousands for the railroad and cargo.

Friends of a proposed measure claim that reorganizing the State Board with the Dairy and Food Commissions will remove friction and improve public health protection at the next general election in November 1910.

Salem reports a surge with 50 new typhoid cases in three weeks, totaling 169 since October. Health officers note many cases unreported, hospitals filled, and officials warn on water safety but public boil-water advisories remain absent.
In Walla Walla a local option vote carried 623 to 622 to keep the city wet. The campaign promised reform and a drop in saloons from 87 to about 20 with 1 saloon per 1000 residents in Pendleton. The dry forces accuse misrepresentation as Pendleton faces a similar movement and a confrontation over a display photo issue involving the Pendleton Commercial Club.
