A mountain region report notes an exceptionally fine timothy hay crop stored in large barn storages to protect from storms. Mountain wheat is above average and mostly in shock, but farmers fear rains before threshing due to lack of threshing machines. Potatoes look good with a larger expected yield, while corn stands are poor in parts.
Hainey, a young employee on the electric power project, was arrested Saturday by Marshal Foster on Sheriff Taylor’s orders after delivering a threatening bawl to a Pendleton store proprietor. He was held in the city jail overnight and remains in county custody. Portland Prisoners Escape details follow.
Aug. 15 reports from Chetov and Tokio describe the sinking of the Russian cruiser Novik and the destruction of the Vladivostok squadron by Admiral Kamimura. Ships fled Port Arthur, with heavy losses among Russian crews, while Japanese forces pressed the harbor defenses and claimed superiority in the Strait of Korea.
The biennial national conclave of the Knights of Pythias opened in Louisville with about thirty thousand members and 10,000 uniform rank members in town. Up to 50,000 visitors expected for the parade tomorrow. The encampment at Shawnee park with 6,000 tents was turned over to James R. Carnahan, major-general, as uniformed ranks appeared by brigades and saluted.
Reports from Augusta indicate a mob in Statesboro lynched fifteen negroes at 4 AM for the Hodges family murder. Two suspects brought to Statesboro allegedly confessed and implicated eighteen others, in a brutal crime described as one of the south’s most revolting.
Pine Creek farmer Gebhart, long a neighborhood terror, again draws attention as a suit is filed in Justice Wood's court over a threatening bill. His dogs reportedly stood by when Constable Laverder attempted to serve papers, and Sheriff Taylor has been asked to assist in completing service.
The United States land office announces a hearing on September 8 for settlers who lost lands and improvements due to the Wilcoxon ruling. Lands originally within the Northern Pacific railway limits were taken from the railroad and opened to settlement, then awarded to Eastern Oregon Land Co. after the 1890 act.
Work on the Koo power plant pipeline advances with 2500 feet laid and grading extending farther. Several gangs of 10 to 40 men operate daily to blast rock and build trestles, aiming to accelerate progress despite occasional labor or material shortages.
The 44th annual State Fair to be held at Salem September 12 to 17 features increased premiums, a larger stock show with California exhibitors, and an exhibit on Northwest Canada products. Racing and evening entertainment are promised, with premiums list available from secretary W A Moores. A second item reports a theft at the Eagle mill, with money missing from a desk drawer and no clue to the culprit, likely hobos. A final transfer records county land to school district No. 16 for the old poor farm site in Reservation addition to Pendleton, sale price 2825 dollars, with closing of the conveyance pending until Saturday.
