Walla Walla Mayor Demands End to Gambling

A Walla Walla report says Mayor Hunt urges strict enforcement of the anti gambling law. He calls for abolition of nickel in the slot machines in cigar stores and amusements and for cleansing the red light district. The move alarms gamblers and the sporting fraternity. The mayor vows to enforce gambling abolition even if it requires him to assume police duties.

Plans for Remodeling of Court House Adopted

County commissioners adopted Architect Troutman’s remodeling plan for the court house and ordered immediate work. Foreman Cole, hired by the county, will oversee repairs with most tasks performed in-county under his supervision. Crews will plaster and rework areas while scaffolding and safety measures are set to begin.

The U R N LIME rail project notes limited road work this year due to labor shortages. Ballasting on the Washington division at Winona started earlier but halted for lack of workers. Next year, main line from Eoho west along the Columbia may be ballasted, and Spokane Branch from Pendleton improved. Curves may be straightened and running time cut. Pendleton Adopts Sunday Closing Ordinance With Funeral Exceptions

Regents Meet Discuss Opening and Funding at Weston Normal

The Eastern Oregon State Normal School board met in Weston yesterday afternoon to plan the coming season. They reported $5,825 already raised of a $10,000 goal, with little chance to complete the sum. Some teachers offered half pay to reduce the need to $7,600, but the board rejected it, preferring full reimbursement if teachers work.
