From Elgin to the Blues, surveyors hunt a pass for a mysterious railway to Walla Walla. Rumors swirl about backers, with Northwest Electric eyed as a potential driver to boost river power and plant capacity as pipe line capacity and state holdings rise to full development.
The Rochester victory of James Havens, Democrat, alarms party leaders as New York papers rail against Taft era tariffs. Havens rides a platform for tariff reform benefiting consumers, wool, hides, lumber and iron ore duties, plus income tax and independence of political houses. Aldridge sticks to Republican lines, courting prophesied defeats with pledges and patter. Both candidates back reciprocity with Canada and postal reforms. The East Oregonian reports that a promised interior department approval for county road spending across a reservation was misleading. The county fears future tolls on cattle sheep and horses, with stockmen paying 8 to 10 cent per animal while detours of 100 miles are common. County Judge Gilliland says the county will not fund roads and stockmen already face high charges.
Positive identification of the body found in the mill race Saturday afternoon as Jack Peters, missing eight weeks, was conveyed to W J Dake while Coroner Folsom spoke. Peters had boarded with Dake for a year, with unique wrist lumps and a pronounced lump noted. The coroner’s jury found the remains were Peters and that he died by drowning in the Byora mill race around February 21, with most witnesses deeming death a self-inflicted act.
Sam Thompson drove an auto from Freewater to Pendleton beating a groving passenger train by ten minutes. Aboard were Mrs. Wm. Blakeley and Miss Thelmus Thompson along with Thompson. East Oregonian notes the race result.
In Dayton locality farmers report crusted soil described as frost dried ground. Surface impenetrable two inches deep formed after March fresta and heavy rains moistened soil then dried. A two year old brown Percheron melding named Stray or Stolen and Lazy Jon left hip was reported missing. A reward of 10 dollars is offered for information leading to recovery. Inquire at this office.
Ezra Meeker arrives in town with his ox team on a trip from Walla Walla to Pendleton and then Kane City. He backs a Congressional bill for 50 000 to mark the emigrant road and place monuments if funded. Meeker recalls pioneer era and plans to leave a knowledge legacy for posterity. Also notes dairy expansion in Wallowa County and the Walla Walla paper news shift, plus fruit prospects and frost risk along with strawberry bloom forecasts.
James Bryan buys a large seven-seat 45 horsepower Franklin taxicab and plans to operate from Leplement Co. building on Third Street south of Main. The vehicle arrived from Walla Walla and is noted for quiet operation and modern features, replacing the older 1900 Mitchell in the fleet.
The City Park track for the county school athletic meet on May 14 is being shaped by workers. A county road grader levels the grounds, and the baseball diamond will be situated inside the track area.
At a stockholders meeting of the First National Bank of Athena B B Richards was elected cashier and BF B LeGrow became president replacing Koonts and LeGrow will also assume the vice presidency Henry Keepke becomes vice president and assistant cashier Ernest Zerba moves from bookkeeper to assistant cashier The change follows LeGrow’s private business interests and Koonts retirement plus Richards praised as well suited for trust duties.
