Government Order a Joke: Free Roads Fizzle on Reservation

The East Oregonian reports that a promised interior department approval for county road spending across a reservation was misleading. The county fears future tolls on cattle sheep and horses, with stockmen paying 8 to 10 cent per animal while detours of 100 miles are common. County Judge Gilliland says the county will not fund roads and stockmen already face high charges.

Body Identified in Mill Race Death Probe

Positive identification of the body found in the mill race Saturday afternoon as Jack Peters, missing eight weeks, was conveyed to W J Dake while Coroner Folsom spoke. Peters had boarded with Dake for a year, with unique wrist lumps and a pronounced lump noted. The coroner’s jury found the remains were Peters and that he died by drowning in the Byora mill race around February 21, with most witnesses deeming death a self-inflicted act.
