Exempt Firemen Certificates Delayed in Athena Fire Dept

A retiring Athena Fire Chief states the department has received long delayed exempt fireman certificates. Overhaul of records continues and eligible veterans will get certificates promptly. Enrollment of new members is urged to maintain an efficient force as veterans approach retirement. Excursion train plans for the county school track meet and oratorical contest were discussed with railroad officials and local associations.

Fruit Outlook Positive in Walla Walla Area

District fruit suspect G. L. Whitney reports excellent fruit condition across Walla Walla Columbia and Garfield counties after touring the region. He says no damage has occurred and, absent killing frosts, yields could be record breaking in his counted fields with widespread new planting and growing orchard attention.

Selection of Baker County Land For Homesteaders

John H. Lewis, secretary of the state land board, filed in the local land office the selection of forty four thousand acres in Baker county to be given to homesteaders who pay for irrigation and reclamation. The plan is similar to the Twin Falls project under the Carey act, but the state will not charge for this land.

Census enumeration urged for North and South Athena precincts

This morning Charles Betts began census enumeration for the Athena precincts. Citizens must provide information confidentially. no data affects taxes, military, juries, school laws, or immigration. Officials stress complete population and agriculture figures for ten year planning. Families asked to report all members, origins of parents, farms, crops, yields, and livestock to speed the count.

Pendleton Grammar Grades to Enter Athena Meet May 14

Pendleton public schools plan strong effort to win the Athena cup at the interscholastic track meet May 14. High school and four grammar schools form athletic organizations led by Tom Boylen, with divisions A to C for grades and a four grammar grade event as part of the interclass cross country run.

Lawsuit Dismissal In Athena Case Over Damages

For the second time the original mal t was oiled. The case of Jobo Bergerio against Dr J A Sponogle of Athena was dismissed Monday morning on motion of the plaintiff. Bergerio sought 15000 dollars for the alleged rain of his daughter Thienuit who has died twice and been dismissed as well.

Walla Walla Visitors Parade Through Athena and Pendleton

A large Walla Walla Commercial club contingent of 126 members plus many wives visited Athena on Tuesday, escorted by Athena Commercial Association members and local students. The procession included a Freewater to Weston rope line, a Pendleton reception, and plans for future exchanges between the two cities and Pendleton. In Condon, Bowerman supporters lost to Independents in a sharp city election, while Stanfield faces strong labor demand with hundreds of workers needed for upcoming orchards and irrigation developments. Train service changes on the O R and N adjust routes to speed through Pendleton and Walla Walla mornings and evenings.

Kirks Baby Died After Month of Illness

Earliest Halley’s Comet Sightings Warned At Georgetown

Georgetown University researchers estimate ideal naked eye viewing at 10 a m on Friday April 15. Throughout April and early May the comet should be visible in the eastern sky a few degrees north of the horizon before dawn. By May 17 viewability drops as it lines with the sun. after that the comet rises in the evening sky and on May 20 it will be about two hours after sunset, with the interval lengthening each night.

Walla Walla Youth Dies in Train Car Accident

A 26 year old man from Walla Walla, Floyd B. Hussey, was fatally mangled when a train he rode broke apart. Hussey, a militia member, died shortly after the incident on Northern Pacific train No 67 while attempting to steal a ride to an inspection near Walla Walla.
