Piano pupils presented a recital at Mrs J D Plamondon home with Mrs Stites of Portland assisting. The program featured multiple instrumental and vocal pieces, with students achieving high percentages in the class standings and the county contest set for Pendleton May 25.

Ferndale hosts debate with Athens team tonight led by Arnold Lewis Stewart and Tom Anton. Mrs Lillian Down Doteen presides the spelling tryout. Fifth grade averages exceed 80 percent with Marthe Hult at 100 and Belle Partron at 88 percent.

Easter at M. E. Church Youthful Vocal Solo Delights

A large Sunday evening audience at the Methodist church enjoyed a fine Kester program arranged by the pastor and Sunday school. The highlight was a vocal solo by Robert Stites of Portland, with Mrs. Stites formerly known as Mytalene Froker from Athena. John Shick, visiting relatives, came from Odessa Washington to attend.

Northwest Could Lead the World in Hydro Power Plans

Speaker H B Miller urges utilization of Columbia River power to build an industrial Northwest rivaling global centers. He cites Columbia River hydro potential and regional shares of U S power, urging irrigation and power projects, with West states totaling about 70 percent of national power. Miller forecasts a metal future for electricity and notes the Vin Moore company will perform in Athena from April 37.

Big Picnic to Close Friday Night Mardi Gras Festivities

Pendleton society hosts a two day celebration with Caledonian events on Friday May 22 and Saturday May 23. A Mardi Gras style party ends the fest with Main street lights and confetti. Portland singers and dancers scheduled to arrive, and gatherings include Caledonian concert and literary program.
