Pioneer Thomas J Watts Dies at Age 87 in Athena
Thomas J Watts longtime Oregon pioneer and early South Methodist minister died at his son Homer Watts home in Athena after years of poor health He was born in Kentucky in 1830 and moved through Missouri Mexico and California before homesteading on Pine Creek north of Athena He survived by his widow and seven children with one daughter and two sons from his second marriage. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Episcopal church conducted by Rev Payne. Watts helped shape early Willamette Valley and Umatilla County pioneer life and was known for his integrity and warmth.

Death of Rosie Owen, shoemaker and band man, in hotel room
Rosie Owen, a shoemaker and member of the Athens band, died in his room at the St. Nichols hotel after retiring Saturday night. The body was found Sunday after he failed to show for breakfast and later meals. Funeral held Thursday at 2 in the Methodist church with Athens band escort and a funeral march. Relatives notified. son Lawrence Amos Rule and mother Mrs. Whitlock connected to the insurance policy. Amputation of Dean Dudley Lifted by Surgery
After extended treatment and hopeful attempts to save the limb a surgical operation was performed by Dr. Kaylor at Walla Walla to remove Dean Dudley s left leg above the knee. The patient recovered from the shock and is progressing as well as could be expected under the circumstances. A long standing tubercular involvement in the knee joint had been treated in California and Oregon with the aim of saving the limb, but all efforts failed and amputation became necessary. The outlook now favors early recovery and restored health.

County Schools In Annual Meet At Pendleton
The fourth annual Umatilla county schools track meet and oratorical contest is set for Pendleton at Roundup Park. Athena and Pendleton will compete with divisions in sprints, jumps, throws, and declamations, while 375 registrations have been logged as the primary election nears and voters rush to register before the May 15 deadline.
