St Benedicts year starts as enrollment rises
St Benedicts college opens its 76th scholastic year with higher enrollments than 1981-32 projections. A solemn high mass opened the day led by Rev Leonard Schwinn O.S.B. and Rev Leo Gassman preached. Freshman class numbers lead, with 86 men, while Atchison and Maur Hill campuses show robust rosters across college and high school divisions. Civil War veteran dies near Effingham at 92
Francis Merion Bennett aged 92 a Civil War veteran and longtime Effingham area resident died at his home three and a half miles southeast of Effingham. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 3:30 PM in Effingham Methodist church with Rev Heas of the United Congregation officiating. Burial will be Evergreen Cemetery Effingham. Bennett born in 1840 in Hillsboro Ohio enlisted in the 60th Ohio and later served in the 8th Ohio Cavalry. He is survived by his widow five children and six grandchildren.

A contract will be let soon for repairing highway No. 4 from the old Waggener farm north to the gravel leading to Omaha Junction. The work will widen curves and require grading with a new route at the bottom of the hill. the bridge at the bottom will be unused. Rest of the highway toward Atchison delayed until next year.
