Effingham double tragedy ends in murder and suicide

Effingham residents discover George G. Pickett and wife dead after a morning attack. Pickett’s note details dispute over a $50 bill and intent to settle, then he shoots himself with a shotgun. Mrs. Pickett died from throat injuries and head blows from a hatchet and knife.

Local robberies and burglaries confessed by Sammy Jones

From Wednesday's Daily June 8 the local colored boy Sammy Jones confesses six more thefts and implicates three other youths in a gang of youthful thieves. The crimes include a handbag snatching on North Fourth street April 30, a mesh bag and shoes from Joey Lyndon’s car March 26, a break in at F E Hardrome March 26, a traveling bag taken from Balle Waggener on North Fifth street, a stolen corner from St Benedict's college car, and an automatic revolver stolen from Francis Kramer’s car at St Benedict's church. Police say Jones has difficulty recalling details due to the number of incidents.

Hailstorm near Kickapoo devastates four square miles

A severe hailstorm south of Atchison near Kickapoo ruined all crops over about four square miles with hail four to five inches deep in ditches. A strong wind, called a young cyclone, toppled trees and shattered windows along the roads while Missouri Pacific signals wires were broken by falling trees. No casualties reported.

Troy Couple Wed 50 Years in Doniphan County

Cloudburst and Flood Damage Hit Atchison Weston

A Friday June 10 report describes a near cloudburst with severe lightning in Atchison around 6 pm causing garden and street flooding. Weston saw four inches of rain in 30 minutes, high winds, broken skylights, downed limbs, and power and phone outages. Lowlands flooded and tobacco losses feared. Roy Stout jailed in Brandtown for domestic incident involving wife and children. arrest by Sheriff Ray Fletcher after Mrs Stout requested detention.

Everest Trip a Big Success for Atchison Visitors

About 50 Atchison business and professional men visited Everest last night despite rain. They attended a concert by the Atchison high school band at the Methodist church, enjoyed a banquet, heard speeches by local leaders, and planned future social exchanges with Everest and surrounding communities.

Tragic double death linked to Atchison native in St Louis

Elmer V. Kline 35 formerly of Atchison killed wife Helen 34 in St Louis apartment then shot himself. Their 186 month old son Walter survived. Kline, a furniture salesman, moved between Kansas City and St Louis. burial planned in Atchison and Kansas City for the wife.

Sabetha Boxer Dies After Bout With Joe Torkelson

Sabetha Kansas June 8 Chet Edwards a Fort Riley mechanic died at a hospital after a boxing contest last night with Joe Torkelson of Everest staged by a local National Guard battery. Edwards lost the decision but was not thought injured until being found unconscious in his dressing room. He had boxed for several years.

Gold Star Mothers elect Bosanko head at state meeting

Hutchinson Kansas June 8 A resolution urging relief legislation for mothers of veterans was adopted by the Gold Star Mothers at the state convention of the American Legion Auxiliary. Elizabeth Bosanko of Atchison was elected president with Sada Long St John vice president Blanche Harkins Paola secretary and Eva Stevens Wichita treasurer. Governor Woodring addressed the annual banquet as officers were slated for election.

Dogs poisoned in north Division street neighborhood

In the last weeks three dogs have been poisoned in the area north of Division Street on North Second Street. One dog belonged to Al Gorrell, a city fireman, and officials warn against poisoning animals as children could be hurt. Police should be notified if dogs are a nuisance.
