Atchison Chamber of Commerce board set plans for a January 22 drive to raise 3500 for a second year of the county horticultural program. Leo Nusbaum of Dolan Mercantile was named to assist Floyd Willette in organizing and choosing 20 supporters. About 800 already has been raised, reducing the target to 2900. The program, supported by Farm Bureau and Kansas State Agricultural College, totals 5000 yearly for agent Henry Lobenstein. In the first year, about 600 acres of commercial apple orchards were planted, near the present bearing 623 acres producing 39000 in 1997. Potatoes and tomatoes are being pursued commercially, with the county showing strong soil suitability. apple prospects this year are good despite last year’s reduced crop. The program raised Atchison county from ninth to second in state orchard development, aiming for first with 1000 additional acres. If 1000-acre annual plantings continue, the county could reach 5000 acres profitable for the city and county. Next year roughly 150 cars of apples are expected to ship from Atchison county. A retail division dinner program will be arranged, and a keynote on retail merchandising will be considered, while a state chamber bill to fund Kansas university extension salaries failed by two votes.
