Auto Show to Open with Sealed Hood Reliability Run
Rockford hosts a four day auto show with a two day reliability run by the Rockford Motorcar Dealer's association on September 20 and 21. Each of the two routes totals about 132 or 133 miles with sealed hoods and official observers aboard. Entrants may be dealers or individuals. penalties apply for rule violations or early/late check ins. The main show then runs September 22 to 25 under canvas at State and Charles streets.

Storm Ravages Ashton City With High Winds
A severe rain and wind storm swept through the city last Wednesday afternoon, with speeds of 40 to 60 mph. Large trees were blown down in Ashton blocking streets and many limbs were stripped. An I N U high voltage line on Evans avenue was knocked across by a fallen tree and telephone lines were knocked out. In the countryside corn was blown and trees suffered.

Mrs Platt Unconscious After DeKalb Auto Crash
Mrs Harry Platt of DeKalb remains unconscious after an automobile accident near Henry Nelson s residence. Doctors fear for her recovery as she has not regained consciousness at all. Tuesday she was moved to her home from DeKalb City Hospital for care. Other injured occupants have recovered. driver Charles Glossop was in Ashton for auto repairs and remains sore from the crash.

Re Rating of Ashton Insurance with Water Works Instal
Ashton has been re rated by the Insurance Inspection Bureau and placed in a different class due to the water works system installed last spring. New rates effective Monday morning vary from a ten to fifty percent reduction with some unchanged or raised in a few cases. Public buildings lead with the school at 38 cents and churches drop about ten percent except United Evangelical Church at 80 cents. Merchants see substantial reductions in business property. An entertainment course by Lyceum Bureau of Chicago will be presented in the high school auditorium, with a meeting naming officers for the grantors and ticket sales sufficient to guarantee the course.

August Coolest Month Record in Area Weather Notes
August proved exceptionally cool with a maximum of 88 and a 64 mean, the coldest on record for August. Frost occurred on several nights, rainfall totaled 3.8 inches, below the 6.3 normal. Early Coal Discoveries In Illinois History
A review of early coal mentions assigns discovery to Joliet and Marquette in 1673, correcting the Hennepin attribution to a 1689 map. Mining began much later, with Mount Carbon mines in Jackson County opened 1810 and first production in 1833 at 6 000 tons. Pfeiffer Fritz Nuptials at Nachusa Parsonage

Ashton To Host 50th Lee County Sunday School Jubilee
The Lee County Sunday School Association plans a jubilee next year to mark its 50th anniversary with a convention to be held in Ashton in June.
