Friend of Lincoln Dies at 71 in Marengo
Miles Grennon, longtime Marengo resident and personal friend of Abraham Lincoln, served as pallbearer at Lincoln's funeral and was among the fourth Civil War soldiers who formed the military escort to Lincoln’s body from Baltimore to Washington. He died at his Marengo home Friday morning at age 71.

News of the City Tells Of Visitors And Local Happenings
Railroad painters brightened local yards while Mrs. Frank Gebord of Iowa and Mrs. George B. Garrett visited relatives. J. W. Wingert hosted, and Irwin Roesler returned from Dixon as head baker. Zeller attended the Grand Lodge in Springfield and N. A. Petrie sought eye care in Rockford. Several residents traveled to Chicago and Dixon for visits, and lectures and meetings occurred at the Methodist church. The Gazette added four new subscribers and noted plans for four-generation photos and upcoming Thanksgiving gatherings. Funeral Held For Mrs George Gonnerman At St John’s
Funeral services were held Tuesday for Mrs Dena Christina Cordes Gonnerman at her Reynolds township home and St John’s Lutheran Church in Ashton. She died Friday evening after an operation at home. Born August 14, 1885 in El Paso, she moved to Ashton with her parents sixteen years ago. She married George E. Gonnerman September 28, 1908, and they had a daughter who died in infancy. Survived by her husband, her parents, seven sisters and two brothers, with interment in Franklin Grove Cemetery. The community extends sympathy to the bereaved family.
