Remembering James Batchelor Death of Ashton resident and longtime Methodist layman

A funeral service for James Batchelor of Ashton followed his 72nd birthday death on November 12 1919. Born in Houghton Conquest England in 1847 he immigrated to America in 1870 settling in Lyons New York then Ashton. He was a faithful member of the Ashton Methodist church and Class No 6 of the Sunday school. He leaves a wife Caroline Cheery and son George W Batchelor along with nephews nieces and friends. The service was conducted by Dr W E Kern with burial in Ashton cemetery and six church officers serving as pallbearers.

Thanksgiving Service At Presbyterian Church

The annual Thanksgiving service will be held at the Presbyterian church at 10:00 a.m. Rev. E. K. Yeakel will have charge of the service and Rev. W. B. Kern will preach the sermon. There will be special music and a reminder to say thank you for God’s blessings.

Philathea Class Plans Christmas Charity Meeting

The Philathea class will meet at the Presbyterian church next Monday afternoon to pack a Christmas box with clothing fruit and groceries for the needy. Campaign 15 Near Close in Lee County Farm Membership Drive

Farmers in Lee County, despite bad roads and weather, have signed 756 members as the Lee County Soil Improvement Association and Illinois Agricultural Association push to finish territory before the November 21 deadline. Local committees of 175 farmers report cooperation high, with 1,000 members signed and expectations to double in the final stretch if favorable conditions prevail.

Miss Blanche Hood who lived with Mr and Mrs J Wetzel wed Jer ome Strayve Saturday evening in West Chicago. The Congregational minister officiated at the groom’s brother Joseph Strayve’s home. The couple plan to live in West Chicago where he has a job as a foreman for J M Egan who built the sewer.

New Express Rules Set For December 1 Effective

New express rules take effect December 1 requiring non paper wrappings for packages over 25 pounds and banning ordinary boxes for heavy shipments. Wooden or fiberboard containers of specified strength become mandatory, aligning express with freight standards. Regulators say December 10 deadline gives shippers time to adjust.

Funeral Held for Catherine Kelley at Franklin Grove

Catherine Kelley nee Griese born in Hinebach Germany October 21 1541 died November 13 1919 at home Franklin Grove aged 78 years 22 days. She came to the United States at 16 after a 34 day voyage landing July 4 and settling in Franklin Grove where she lived 61 years. She married Peter Kelley January 5 1863 and left a widower after 56 years of marriage. Survived by husband and children including Mrs Vincent Arnould Dixon Mrs George Russell Oakland CA John Kelley Franklin Grove Mrs Margaret Luckey Franklin Grove Charles Kelley Peter Kelley Jr and Mrs Daniel Utz Bradford township plus two sisters.
