City Council Vacates Hick's Ave for Railroad Crossing Gates

At a special meeting last week the council passed an ordinance vacating part of Hick's avenue where it crosses the railroad at the stock yards. The move completes the city railway agreement with Chicago & North Western to operate gates at two crossings for 16 hours daily. Brown and Douglas avenues will gain gated protection with two shifts working in a tower opposite the depot. Cartwright and Richardson avenues will receive wig wag signals replacing bells still in use. The North Western plans to install gates before ground freezes.

Train Strikes Car Near Park Avenue Crossing

A Ford driven by George Walter and his son Hapleal was struck by the No. 19 moon fast train at the Park Avenue crossing. Walter suffered a badly lacerated nose and was taken to Rochelle Hospital. Hapleal escaped unharmed. Nearby residents alerted physicians who treated Walter and arranged transport.

Robbers Fail in Nitro Bomb Bank Vault Break-In

Burglars poured nitro glycerine into the Franklin Grove Bank outer vault door Friday night but failed to release the inner bars. The attempted break in through a window caused vault damage but yielded nothing to the robbers, with no clues for investigators.
