Progress on Water Works Advances Despite Frost

G Hoy leads a water works project digging ditches and laying mains on Lincoln Way and Richardson Avenue. Frost four inches slows work but the digging machine reaches 5 feet 7 inches deep and a 150 foot target depth for the well is planned before testing. The 6,000 pound pump arrives and is stored secure as crews push south to finish the south side before returning north.

Death of W. D. Tilton in Spring Township Iowa

W. D. Tilton died at his Spring Township home October 28 at 6 am from paralysis. He was 63. Survived by wife Nellie and nine children. Funeral at home, burial in Afton cemetery, Rev. Stevens of Larrabee conducted services. Born April 19, 1851 in Ogle County Illinois to James and Susan Tilton. Ten of twelve children survive.

Grade program well received at public school event

The high school auditorium hosted a largely attended program of musical selections recitations and other numbers by the different grades. A highlight was 20 little girls costumed as grownups in In Grown Up Land and the finale A Carnival of Song by older students.

The Chicago and North Western railway carried 38,389,128 passengers in the year ending June 30, 1914, with zero fatalities. Passenger total rose 2.92 percent from the prior year, and the system covers 10,000 miles of track including suburban and country service.

Great Wassman to Perform at High School Auditorium

The Senior class hosts magician and humorist Great Wassman next Friday evening at the High School Auditorium. Proceeds support stereographic pictures shown in the laboratory. Tickets are 15 and 25 cents from school children.

Post office warns that missing street numbers cause delays during the holiday rush. Chicago records show 44 percent of first class mail improperly addressed, with large losses to dead letter and extra handling costs. Edwin S. Telephone Company Ends Busy Season in Ash ton

The Farmer Telephone Company finishes this season of reconstruction in Ash ton after laying underground cable and rebuilding lines. About $2,000 spent this year. the central switchboard updated. 475 telephones now served making it the second largest exchange locally. Next year, remaining system work includes more underground cable and removal of poles on Lincoln Way.
