The 7,000,000 registered men not yet called will have postponed physical exams under Provost Marshal Crowder. New rules assign registrants to five classes by order of call, reducing local board labor by 80 percent and settling economic questions before physicals.

Charles Pollock former Ashton resident and longtime Columbus, Nebraska businessman died October 20 at Methodist Hospital in Omaha after a hernia operation. Survived by wife, brother Louis Pollock of Bartlesville Oklahoma, and sister Mrs Fremont D Lahman of Franklin Grove. Funeral held in Columbus a week prior.
Emma Erhard, 41, died Monday at Watertown hospital after long illness. She was born March 24, 1876, daughter of the late Peter Eisenberg, and married John Erhard in 1897. Survived by husband and five siblings. Private funeral held at her brother John G. Eisenberg’s home with Rev. F W Landner officiating. Interment in Bradford cemetery.
Lee County chairmen in four townships organized to educate women about registration for patriotic service. The plan targets every community with appointed teachers and local units to organize and report back, ensuring rapid mobilization if a war emergency arises. Polls open Thursday Friday and Saturday afternoons from one to five.
Beginning today citizens face higher costs as the war revenue bill taxes rail travel mail and theater. Eight percent tax on passenger tickets with exemptions for some routes and three percent on freight raise prices for Chicago trips and mail postage. Paul Kunze of Chicago writes to support Ashton boys at Camp Grant sending toothpaste and shaving cream.
The Arden Entertainers opened the high school lecture course with a Wednesday evening show in the Anorium to a good sized crowd. Four young ladies presented mezzo soprano and contralto numbers with readings by Ethel Waite, and an encore worthy Hawaiian act delighted the audience.
A union service will be held in the high school auditorium Sunday at 7 30 o clock. A YMCA speaker from Camp Grant and the YMCA secretary from Dixon will attend. The event is open to all and expected to be well attended.
The International Go To Sunday school day will be observed at the local church Sunday morning at 9 30. Members are asked to attend and bring a friend. Preaching at 10 30 K L C E at 6 15 and at 7 20 the church joins with city churches for union services at the high school auditorium.
Every member of Class No 6 is urged to attend next Sunday at 9 30 morning. A package of new stationery will be given to all who attend. The notice calls Rally day and asks the committee to count attendees.
A seller identifies a forthcoming carload of choice Idaho apples from his orchard. Clarence D Sanders notes the fruit is of high quality and ready for shipment in the near future.
The city faces closing its gas plant and shutting lights on streets and homes unless a shipment of high test gasoline arrives in days. Local supply has been stretched since late summer with no reliable replenishment. Standard Oil offers no fix and one firm promises late month delivery. Ashton residents Mr and Mrs E J Randall visited Dixon yesterday.
About 265 Ashton residents subscribed to the loan with $55 000 asked from Ashton township met in full. Lee county total subscriptions reached about 1 125 000 of the 1 177 600 quota with several townships over or near their targets. The Ashton committee led by N A Petrie and others praised for reaching every man and ensuring local banks supported patrons in Bradford Reynolds Lafayette.
