Red Cross Drives Membership at Ashton High School
A large turnout of Ashton ladies attended a Red Cross meeting at the high school auditorium to join the society and organize. Mrs. Joseph McCleary of Dixon demonstrated Red Cross work while a committee scheduled twice-weekly sessions, beginning Tuesday June 5, and the Board of School Directors offered the auditorium free for meetings and knitting instruction for soldiers.

Doings of the High School Baccalaureate Sermon and Play
The high school notes a Baccalaureate sermon next Sunday in the Methodist church by Rev. F. A. Graham. An exhibit of manual art will run Wednesday evening through the week. The senior class play Down in Maine was staged May 25 with strong acting by Andrus Griffith Hazel Beach and others, aided by the high school orchestra. Proceeds totaled sixty seven dollars and twenty five cents. Various school events and visits are also noted along with tardy excuses and class activities.

Death Claims Captain Frost
Captain John Lyman Frost of Dixon died at his home 604 N Dement Ave after more than a year of infirmities. Born July 11, 1885 in Marion County Ohio he served as private to captain in the Civil War and returned as major. He lived a Christian life and held church offices in Dixon. Funeral held at his late home and Washington Grove Church with Rev George W Stoddard officiating. His loss is mourned by a widow, sister and brother.

Old Plantation Jubilees To Be Sung Here Soon
The celebrated Hann’s Jubilee Singers will perform at the Chautauqua program featuring plantation jubilee songs. The group, led by W A Hann, will include operatic numbers from La Bohème and Rigoletto, plus old darky melodies such as Swanee River and My Old Kentucky Home. Cello solos by W P Talbert and a reading by Mrs W A Hann round out the program.

Shooting Tournament At Ashton Gun Club
The Ashton Gun Club hosts a registered shooting tournament at the local grounds on Tuesday June 12 with a likely large attendance including out of town professionals. Ten 15 third events award trophies for high gun at 75 100 and 150. no contestant may win more than one trophy. The shoot starts at 9:30 with lunch served at noon and shells available for sale. Special events may follow if time permits.
