Ashton Public School Ends 30th Commencement Week
The 30th annual exercises of Ashton Public School featured a twelve member senior class led by Grayce R. Walter and Mildred L. Paddock. The class presented Cupid's Partner and celebrated Class Night with a memorial hall clock gift. Baccalaureate addressed by Rev. Manshardt preceded a formal commencement with Dr. Driver's address.

James Bates Dies in Plano After Short Illness
James Eril Bates, born February 9 1864 in Ashton, died at his Plano home last Friday after a brief illness. He married Minnie J. Gillispie in Plano on March 29 1892 and the pair made Plano their home. Survived by his wife three sons and one brother, with eldest son Eri J serving in the military. Funeral held Sunday at 2 pm from the home with Rev N R Hinds presiding and Sunbeam Lodge 428 A F and A M assisting. interment in Plano Cemetery.

Memorial Day Plans Complete in Ashton
Memorial Day in Ashton will be observed at the school park starting 2 PM with old soldiers and citizens assembling. Rev G K Carpenter will address the crowd, Backus Brothers and Drum Corp will provide music, and graves will be decorated after a march from the town to the cemetery led by the Day Lewis Wood march.

Kelley School picnics closes with student program
At the Kelley school on Friday fifty patrons and pupils joined Miss Minnie Krug for a closing picnic. A dinner with ice cream and cake followed in Mr Attig's yard, then a short pupil program. The year appears successful as shown by student work and parental interest. Fred A Richardson will join Army Y M C A work, take a short course in the east, then proceed to overseas service.

YMCA Seeks 1000 Men Overseas For Canteen Service
The YMCA calls for one thousand men each month through August past draft age but under fifty to serve in France. Must pass strict physicals, endure two eight hour shifts, and avoid German or Austrian birth or parentage. They seek real, capable men, not the unemployed or timid, for non combat duty in the army canteen system.
