May Party Draws 240 Members and Families
The Rebekah and Odd Fellows lodges hosted a large May party Friday evening with 240 attendees. The Sweet Family entertained with a humorous program, Mrs. Sweet impersonated by Mrs. John A. Wagner, and a suffragette address. A presentation honored Earl E. Pierce who leaves for the Marines, followed by the Star Spangled Banner. Senior class invited to a reception in the school auditorium on May 11 1917 at eight o'clock. The hall was decorated in cerise and steel gray with sweet pea flowers. The program featured addresses songs piano solos readings and various performances by the junior class followed by light refreshments and music by the junior orchestra.

The Lee County Sunday School meeting at Compton on May 11 drew 245 registered delegates in calm weather. Outside speakers included Miss Stocker and Clarence DePew, with Rev G H McClintock aiding. business focused on Go to Sunday School and revising the constitution. Officers were elected with Mr H E Currens as President and J S Archer as Vice President among others.

Miss Bila Harck of Lee Center wed Joseph Joyce of Bradford on May 10. After a three course dinner at the groom’s sister’s Rockford home they left for an extended honeymoon. On return they will reside three miles south of Ashton with the groom, a prominent farmer.

Maynete May Day fete draws crowd at East End elevator
May 4 celebration in Ashton Illinois attracted a large audience despite earlier postponements due to cool weather. The event featured a Maypole dance by white dressed girls, a Queen and Fairy procession, and a 10.94 dollar offering with half to fund school equipment. In business news L J and R W Jeter dissolve their partnership and sell the elevator to J Melvin Bergeson who will run operations locally and in Middlebury adding feed seed grinding and grain services.

Rallied to the Colors for Navy Aid
Earl Pierce and Raymond Allstedt left for Chicago to join the service. Pierce then went on to Port Royal South Carolina for three months of training with the fifties as about a hundred people gathered at the depot to bid the boys farewell. The Brewers, arriving from the Orient, visited missions in China Japan Korea the Philippines and Hawaii while Mrs. Brewer returned to Talledaga Alabama and Rev. Brewer prepared to finish the school year.
