Ernst Wiener Dies After Long Lee County Service
Ernst Wiener a longtime Reynolds Township resident and Ashton pioneer died at 83 after a stroke. Born in Germany he immigrated to Lee County in 1864 and held township offices, church leadership, and Republican views. Funeral Thursday at 1 PM at his home and 1:30 PM at the Reynolds M E church with interment in Reynolds cemetery.

The cemetery expansion advances with 1200 shrubs from Dixon nursery to be planted this week. The association offers perpetual care for burial lots at very low prices, with the latest ones securing this service including Riley Paddock, W. E. Paddock, and Mrs. Jacob Vogel. Ordinance No 54 establishes a Board of Local Improvements, appointing Herman Mall and Christ Eurth, effective May 1, 1918, with publication required by law. Local notices also report Methodist and Presbyterian Sunday school classes hosting an evening at the Methodist church, plus sewer business visitations by contractor John M. Egan of Aurora and engineer Paul E. Green of Chicago.

New council takes reins of government in village meeting
The May meeting of the new village board opened with Finance and committee assignments. President Farver named committees including Ordinance and Finance, Petrie was confirmed as Village Treasurer, and Farrer retained as general utility man. Licenses for two pool rooms were renewed at 75 dollars annually. The Landner Quartet from Chicago will perform at the United Evangelical church. A business meeting on May 14 planned for the annual picnic. Ashton asparagus shipments began, 70 crates moved. An advertising note urged quality printing at Gazette office.

William Killmer was a caller in Rockford yesterday. Mrs. Adam Strube and Mrs. Charles Tuck were visitors in Rochelle Tuesday. Mrs. Carl W. Greve and Mrs. Harry L. Billmire went to Dixon yesterday to visit at W. L. Preston’s home. Mrs. William Vogeler traveled to Dywart Iowa to visit her daughter Vera Gonnerman. George Van Ness returned from Rochelle hospital Tuesday afternoon, recovering well. Charles Lake and family moved to the Talley property in town. Mr. and Mrs. Joshua Wolford went to Wichita Kansas where she is a delegate to a Brethren church convention. The Woman’s Foreign Missionary Society of the Methodist church postponed their meeting one week. Charles Hunter and wife moved from Faber’s confectionery rooms to the Joseph Web residence. Misses Maybelle Yenerich and Matilda Pfetzing were visitors in Chicago and Aurora. B. G. Yenerich sent hogs to W. A. Marshall at Bethany and to Roy Cranmer of Assumption and Albert Meyer of Wellsburg Iowa. Frank Moore and his wife of Fairfield Pennsylvania visit Dixon Friday. E. J. Randall and daughter left for Vernon Iowa to attend a recital by Miss Lucile Randall.

President J. B. Farver, who took office Monday evening as Ashton's chief executive, has served longer in that role than any predecessor. In prior administrations, he oversaw the construction of the Gas Plant and Water Works.

Presbyterians Host Reception for New Pastor Manshardt
A Friday evening reception at the Presbyterian church honored Rev. and Mrs. W. H. Manshardt who began pastorship May first. The event featured a ten-piece Sunday school orchestra, vocal numbers, and an ensemble welcome by various church groups, with refreshments for 125 attendees and a benediction by Rev. Manshardt.
