Corner Stone Laid With Impressive Ceremony in Ashton
More than 2,000 people attended the corner stone laying of Ashton’s new $35,000 school building yesterday afternoon at two. Delmar D. Darrah presided as Grand Master of Masons of Illinois with 200 Mason officers present. The event featured a copper box with local historical and civic items, a parade, music by the Ashton Woodmen Band, and an address by Elwood T. Bailey. Ashton later hosted an 8 to 2 baseball win over Lee Center and enjoyed a festive, clear day.

John Wesley Wingert died at his Franklin Grove home on Saturday June 7 after a long illness. Born July 19 1831 in Greencastle PA he served in the Civil War and survived by four sons and one daughter. Funeral at Franklin Grove Methodist on Tuesday. Also notes on a chemical extinguisher for the fire department and church events including quarterly meeting and a temperance program. A large Saturday crowd and traffic in town are described.

Foreman struck on railroad tracks by rock thrown from train
Section Foreman Frank Bohart was hit in the head by a rock thrown from drag on No. 4 as it neared town. The stone ripped a hole in his hat and left a deep head wound, knocking him unconscious briefly. He had turned to wave at the engineer when the attack occurred. Nearby, Mrs. E Weigle and Mrs. John Weigle of Nachusa visited the daughter, Mrs. William Ash, yesterday.

Ashton Poll List Doubled For Women Vote In Village
The Ashton area will see the poll list doubled as women gain limited suffrage in local and presidential matters once the new Illinois law takes effect July 1. About 650 voters are expected in Ashton township and village combined, with officials predicting busier election days ahead.
