Ashton Public School 1912 Commencement at Opera House

The twenty fourth annual commencement exercises of Ashton public school filled the opera house Thursday evening. The 1912 class of twenty four students, the largest in the school's history, were lauded for their achievements as the Junior class decorated the hall in grey and maroon with roses. Lee Center orchestra provided music, Rev Alfred E Simester gave the invocation, and Rev Ernest Wray O Neal of Chicago delivered the address on Popular Fallacies, in a talk lasting over an hour yet held the audience's attention. Frances Allen sang two songs, and diplomas were presented by Supt B A Streeter.

Four Years of Work Under His Superintendency

The speaker praised the four years completed under his supervision and urged students to pursue higher education and build good character. The program ended with orchestra music followed by a benediction pronounced by Rev. Alexander English.

135th Anniversary of Flag Day Observance urged

The American Flag Association reminds readers that June 14 1912 marks the 135th anniversary of the stars and stripes adoption. Mayors urged flag displays on municipal buildings, and patriotic groups push broader observances in schools and communities nationwide. Citizens invited to pledge loyalty and learn the flag’s meaning.

Ashton Second Team Wins 14 8 at Franklin Grove

Ashton High School second team defeats Franklin Grove 14 to 8 as pitcher Hilliard fans 14 and Brown allows four. Lineups include Ashton Gohillard Vaupel Paddock Wallace Chadwick Ellinwood Cheadle Arnould Griffith and Franklin Grove Lahman Shoe maker Kreitzer Crandall 8S Kreitzer Wilson Brown Maronde Peterman with Brown entering in the sixth. Also memorial service set for Sunday at 2:30 pm at Odd Fellows hall by I O O F Memorials.

Alumni Reception Honors Ashton High School Class of 1912

Alumni and friends gathered at the opera house for a reception honoring the class of 1912 with music by the Arion Trio and vocal numbers by local artists. Officers for the coming year were elected Rae Chadwick president Marguerite Roesler secretary Ralph Charters treasurer.

Referendum Vote Form and Woodmen Meeting Planned

Woodmen head camp at Rock Island to meet with Illinois insurgent committee to arrange ballots for a nationwide referendum vote as part of an insurance law compromise. Judge C F Irwin explains petition signatures and the plan to mail ballots to all encampment members once enough signatures are gathered.

Ashton Fourth of July Celebration Promises Music and Fireworks

Ashton prepares a full Fourth of July program with a morning band concert by the Lafayette and Woodmen bands, a callithumpian parade, an address by States Attorney Harry Edwards at 10:30, afternoon races, a Steward versus Ashton ball game at 3:30, an automobile parade at seven, a fireworks display at eight, and a dance with the Troubadours company in the opera house. John Absher will return as public school teacher for the coming year.
