Newton known as Prince of Magic headlines the Ashton Community Chautauqua second day with feats like levitating flowers and vanishing cards. Italian singer duo Venetian Quartet opens with Presto. Mrs Demarchus Brown lectures on Her Long Road about women's education and industrial progress.
Hinrich Jansen Meirath aged 23 of Ashton died Sunday morning after an appendicitis operation. Alonzo Fell, longtime Ashton resident, died Saturday afternoon after illnesses culminating in paralysis. Meirath leaves parents and siblings. Fell leaves daughter Gertrude and mother Eliza. Funeral services for both were held in Ashton with church and Masonic involvement.
The U. E. Church outlines a K. L. C. E. topic for next Sunday evening titled Body Under Soul on Top led by George Killmer. Rev. B. R. Schultze of Highland Park to conduct communion services here next Sunday. He preaches at Ashton Friday and Sunday nights at 7 30, Bradford Saturday 2, Sunday 10 30. Business session Saturday at 3 p.m.
A full corps of teachers is secured for Ashton Public School. O A Fackler becomes superintendent, Lillian D Wyatt principal, Alice Eddy assistant principal, John Arndt grammar department teacher and pen artist in writing. Grades 1–8 assigned to Zeller, Krug, Billmire, Weaver awaiting roles. Noffsinger retires to Mt Morris as college president. Absher moves to Sublette as principal.
Memorial day exercises indoors due to rain draw large turnout. Rev. J. G. Eller delivers patriotic address to crowd at Ashton high school auditorium, with band, quartets, flag ceremony, and roll of honor. Procession to cemetery includes veterans, with prayers and flowers. Children’s Day program announced for June 6 at Presbyterian church.
Last Monday evening at six o clock the Ashton High School juniors hosted a grand seniors banquet. The hall wore senior colors white and gold with rugs and pennants. Sophomore ladies served a five course dinner. Prof Noffsinger gave a closing toast. Glee Club Quartet from North Western College performs Friday. 1915 commencement set for next Wednesday with Rev H N Bannen to speak. John Pfeiffer of Sac County visited his brother Jacob Pfeiffer.
Big prizes for nearly every event funded by local merchants ahead of next Tuesday picnic at Hunt's grove. John Absher leads prize selection with a committee, and displays will be at Gazette Book Store by week’s end. A large turnout is expected for the Ashton area baseball game and the rain date is Thursday if needed. Judicial election looms Monday with Judges Farrand Baume Heard up for re election. Judge Cartwright of Oregon faces Aurora attorney Plain in a notable contest amid calls for party support to retain Cartwright.
