Illinois officials urge newspapers and dealers to enforce a new law prohibiting the sale of toy pistols that shoot blank cartridges effective July 1 1918 and to require red gasoline receptacles labeled GASOLINE to prevent accidents and deaths.
A proposed Illinois bill requires gasoline receptacles in retail trade to be red and labeled gasoline with letters at least one half inch high. Violators face a fine of not less than ten dollars. The item is part of a broader Fourth of July patriotic feature in the issue.
A new chemical extinguisher was tested last Friday evening before the fire department and many citizens. A brush pile north of John Killmer's residence was doused with kerosene and set aflame, flames reaching 26 feet as the chemicals were applied, claimed to be equivalent to 1800 barrels of water. The device recharges rapidly and adds to city fire fighting apparatus. Several company members learned the operation.

Frank Mehlhausen swept all heats in the green race with a mile time of 2:29.

Aiming to curb baiting ducks the law tightens prohibited practices. The schoolhouse project progresses with walls rising the second floor under way and a steam elevator now in operation.
R W Jeter drives a 42 horse Oakland touring car bought this week. Lyman Paddock buys F C Smith residence, occupied by Paddock’s mother. Several residents plan visits to Dysart Garrison Des Moines and Saskatchewan. An upcoming wedding: Clarence Farrer of Redwood Falls Minn to Edith Boling at Ocheyedan Iowa June 25.
Supervisor William A. Hunt of La Fayette hosts about 300 men from Ogle County including county officers from Oregon and local politicians. Ashton residents attend while Lafayette band performs as Delos W. Baxter of Rochelle acts as master of ceremonies. The event emphasizes camaraderie rather than politics in a relaxed get acquainted session.
The Christian Endeavor society names new officers to begin duties July 6 including President Kathryn Griffith Vice President George Garrett Recording Secretary Mrs A M Moore Corresponding Secretary Mrs Mary Glenn Elizabeth Andrus and Music Committee Mr Moore to lead next Sunday with committee meetings to follow pledge support requested.
At a Tuesday board meeting the Ashton Bank directors voted to add 5000 from undivided profits to the surplus fund. The fund reaches 25000 in addition to 50000 as capital. The board also declared the usual semiannual dividend.
The last four days of June brought unprecedented heat with daytime temps around 100 and nights near 80. Ice cream parlors and soda fountains thrived as ice dealers profited, while workers faced heat dangers including a fatal case at Franklin Grove.
Miss Anna Eisenberg daughter of Mrs. George Eisenberg of this city was married to Chester E. Lee Tuesday morning in York Nebraska. Lee is an instructor at York Business College. the bride taught stenography and typewriting there for two years before the wedding. The couple planned a combined visit to Kansas City and Bowling Green Kentucky and would return by early August.
