New School House Election Monday Directors Plan Bond Vote
A special election will be held next Monday from 1 to 4 PM to vote on bonding the township for 25 000 dollars to build a new school house. The old building was condemned and the board of E C Shippee S T Zeller and H A Bremmer has spent months refining plans, aiming for fireproof construction at moderate cost and using old stone in basement walls. The proposed 64 by 99 foot brick building includes concrete basement walls and will not issue additional bonds.

Sanders Taken to Joliet for Life Sentence
Warren Sanders was moved to Joliet Tuesday morning by Deputy Sheriff Phillips to begin a life term for the murder of Mrs. George E. Griffith in Augua last year. He told Sheriff Reid he would be a model prisoner and cause no trouble. Sanders offered to travel alone but was not allowed to. The day before departure his daughter Naoma visited, and Sanders gave her three dollars to buy a bracelet. He asked friends to write often about her and hopes for a pardon within ten to fifteen years, believing the pardon board will consider his case.

Water works levy loses by narrow margin in city vote
The water works proposition went down by nine votes in a special election last Thursday with 119 against and 110 in favor amid a turnout of 235. Voters rejected the measure, while most supported the upcoming school house action and debated personal property tax assessments. The defeat follows persistent opposition to local improvements, yet officials praised the discussion and vowed to revisit the issue in six months. Adam Weishaar, 45, died at his Howard South Dakota home from pneumonia and asthma after dwelling in the area since childhood. he left a wife Eva Hartman and three children, with funeral services held yesterday. Friends Surprise Porters With Neighborly Sendoff
Last Wednesday January 29 a large group of about seventy neighbors surprised Mr. and Mrs. John Porter at their home two miles south of Chana. They gathered at Ed Wood Corners at 10 30 am and delivered food and friendship before presenting a rocker and a Rago lamp.

Ashton Township Tax Records Show Higher Totals and Shifts
The Ashton township tax list shows a total of 16 848 16 dollars, up 594 81 from last year’s 16 253 35. State taxes rise by about 300, county by ~160, road and bridge lower, school and village taxes up due to school building vacancies and water works plans. The assessed lands and property total 775 900, one third of actual value, with district allocations including District No 209 receiving funds from Ogle County.
