City School Prepares For Monday Opening

Excursion to Devil's Lake by C and N W Railway

The line offers a strictly first class personally conducted trip to Devil's Lake on Tuesday September 11 with round trip fare two dollars. Fireman Wm Lange Struck by Large Coal Chunk

Fireman William Lange of engine No 181 was struck on the head by a 25 pound coal piece while shoveling coal on an eastbound freight at Dixon after Nelson. He was transported to a doctor and later returned toward Clinton. doctors reported a severe head wound but no serious complications yet. Also announced: Epworth League Lawn Social at Geo Griffiths on Tuesday September 11 with ice cream and cake for 15 cents.

Express contracts end as Northern Express prepares to operate

As the Adams Express contract with the Chicago Burlington and Quincy expires soon a new Northern Express Co will take over the Burlington line cutting Adams out of about one third of its mileage. The firm forms from the Northern Pacific Express and may merge with the Great Northern Express creating a consolidated network over the Hill lines.

A drunken quatrain tells Maud Muller fleeing with a companion in a benzine touring car. Maud's father pursues on a mule named Jane, the vehicle runs dry, and the tale ends with tragedy and a moral about restraint.

Engine Derails After Freight Train Wreck Near Sheep Yards

Reports describe a Way Freight engine No. 825 derailing on the east end siding after a brake failure left thirty nine cars without air. The engine toppled left into the ground, the tender pulled off rails, and wreckers lifted the engine back to rails. The engine later returned to Sterling to pull coal freight next morning. Hotel changes hands and local notices close with a church rally planned at 6:30 p.m.

Rates Displayed for Interstate Commerce Law Effect

Tuesday morning Station A gent P. J. McMillan presented a display in both the men and women waiting rooms at the depot showing passenger and freight rates between all Chicago & North-Western stations. The exhibit gives the public access to rate information and promotes equal understanding of charges for shipping grain to Chicago.

The Reason for Scarcity of the Silver Dollar

The article explains silver dollars grew scarce after Secretary Shaw ended the government freight payments to banks. Banks shifted to issuing one and two dollar bills, reducing silver use. Banks resisted higher expenses, prompting public outcry and a shift toward paper currency.

Death Claims 13 Year Old Wilburn Vaupel After Appendicitis

Wilburn Jacob Vaupel son of Adam Vaupel and Mary E. Gonnerman was born July 1 1893 at Reynolds and died August 23 1906 in Compton after an appendectomy. He underwent the operation at 10 30 p m the day before and died at four to five o clock the next morning. Funeral held Saturday at Reynolds Church with burial in Ashton Cemetery. The family mourns the loss of a obedient loving son and brother with Rev Stockman preaching the funeral sermon. The text notes numerous relatives and friends left behind.
