Brief Rochelle’s Early History From Hickory Grove to Lane
The Rochelle area began as Hickory Grove along the Kyte River, a key camping ground for settlers and Indians. In 1858 the railroad renamed the settlement Lane after R P Lane, and Lane became a village in 1861, later Rochelle city. A 1866 charter amendment altered the village charter before Rochelle’s incorporation as a city.

Band Concert Moves to Saturday After Fair Engagement
The band for Amboy’s Lee County Fair performed Wednesday only for the fair and will present Saturday evening concerts instead. Next week regular Wednesday performances resume. Program includes Officer of the Day Fox Trot, The Gay American, Trombone Blues, Opera Gems, March Overture, Pick Me Up and Lay Me Down in Dear Old Dixie Land, American Prince, The Land of Dreams, American Triumph, and The Star Spangled Banner.

Anil Strike Delays Ashton Paving Project
Concrete paving on the Ashton project has paused this week due to a railroad strike delaying material shipments. Pigeons Set for Sunday Race From Ashton to Chicago
Express Agent William H. Fee reports that Chicago pigeon clubs will run a semi annual race from Ashton to Chicago next Sunday. An express carload will arrive Saturday with Mr. R. Albers of Chicago accompanying the shipment. Albers hopes Ashton volunteers will open coops Sunday morning to start pigeons on their race to Chicago.

Funeral services for Civil War veteran August Degner
August Frederick Degner aged 87 died after a short illness at his son’s home in Bradford township. He served as a corporal in the 75th Illinois during the Civil War and is survived by four sons and one daughter, with a brother in Dysart. Funeral held at Lee Center Congregational Church with burial in Woodside cemetery. Also rent notices from Farmers Telephone Co. posted July 1 to October 1, 1922 at Ashton Bank.
