County Agent L S Griffith of Amboy issues a circular urging testing of seed corn to ensure vitality and avoid poor crops. He advises reseeding alfalfa with nurse crops or thorough ground work, discusses wheat seed concerns, and outlines control of white grubs by late plowing, delayed planting, pasturing with hogs, and rotating to clover.
At the Methodist Episcopal church a reception will honor new members joined this conference year. 41 members total in recent and prior joins. A representative committee oversees plans, and a pleasant evening is hoped. All church members, congregation, Sunday school, and friends are invited. Mrs. Thomas Gilbert attended a Chicago funeral for Mrs. S J Howe. W B McCrea, recovering, had a relapse but is improving. C Stimon of Dixon, former Whiteside county clerk, visited John D Charters. S T Zeller Jr of Genoa is in town for business and family visits.
Sophomores wrote a paper on An American Who Made Health Contagious read to Miss Wyatt. The Commercial Geography class finished England and now studies France and Holland. Various notices cover class pictures, substitutes, illness, and pupil achievements. Local visits and upcoming readings are listed along with new subscribers and renewals.
Faust H. Boyd advances Ashton garage growth by purchasing part of Mary Charters Estate for 3000 dollars to expand into a 48 by 126 foot building with a heating plant room for 50 automobiles. The project includes a new sales room office and a ladies rest area to serve Lincoln Highway travelers, with improvements to handling parts and a central entrance.
Discussion notes that March 4 1917 falls on a Sunday and the Constitution sets the noon term expiration. It is noted as the first Sunday inauguration in U.S. history and raises who would serve from noon March 4 if a new president is not sworn in. Democratic side favors reelecting Woodrow Wilson.
The Rock River conference marks its 76th founding anniversary on August 26 with a memorial stone at Mount Morris Illinois where the 1840 log house stood. Alumni of Mount Morris seminary and college plan a reunion August 25 and an old settlers day on August 24 making a three day celebration.
William Schade opens an auto fuel station. Cassville visitors include H H Miller. Miss Hildebrand to wed Charles Pfetzing. Judges Farrand Crabtree and city officials visited the Gazette office. D H Newcomer ships about 200000 pounds of junk iron and sells his junk pile for 1000 dollars. Evens Moore and Reed add a new scale and a horse wagon. Merrill Stevens visits from Evanston. parents Rev and Mrs Stevens live in Sioux City. Philathas shower for Mrs Henry Heinzeroth. gifts given and refreshments served. A train of 50 U S Army cars moves through in two weeks. Illinois Northern Utilities installs a brighter transformer behind Glenn’s hardware. Mrs E B Arnould marked 58th birthday with family gathering. Charters’ store holds a busy One Cent sale. coffee and other goods sell briskly. Phyllis Vivian, two weeks old, dies. funeral held. A baby girl born to Mr and Mrs Boyd Butler dies shortly after birth. funeral held.
The Rural Eighth Grade Graduation will be held tomorrow evening in the high school auditorium. Fourteen graduates from six area schools will receive diplomas. County Superintendent L. W. Miller will present diplomas. State's Attorney Harry Edwards of Dixon will deliver the address, with readings by Mrs. Fred A. Graham and a solo by Miss Ruth Zeller. High School Orchestra will provide music. Reserved seats are on sale at Gazette Book Store.
Henry Heinzeroth and Ruth E Cox were married Saturday evening in a ceremony at the groom’s home conducted by Rev R L MacWherter. The couple, long residents of the city, will resume life in their new residence on Douglas avenue with plans for a later wedding journey. Hazel Heinzeroth served as ring bearer.
Judge Richard S. Farrand of Dixon has been secured to give the dedication address for the soldiers monument on May 28, replacing the unavailable speaker due to the Methodist church general conference session. The Ashton Township Sunday School Convention promotes a “Go to Sunday School” Day with three sessions. May 7 features union and church services led by Rev. Fred A. Graham, Rev. J. G. Eller, and Prof. O. A. Fackler. Speakers discuss conserving results and securing cooperation for Sunday School.
The Venerich family expresses heartfelt thanks to neighbors and friends for sympathy and flowers shown during their bereavement. Mrs. B. G. Venerich and family extend appreciation. Rochelle visitors Tuesday included Mrs. George R. Charters and daughter Mary.
