Lt. Robert Poole informs Mrs. Martha K. Schafer of Ashton Illinois that her son died October 20 1918 while aboard the Pittsburgh in Rio de Janeiro Brazil. The body rests in San Francisco Xavier cemetery lot 24 grave 10 with a monument and headstones. personal effects were mailed from Rio on December 10. Bodies remain five years per Brazilian law and may be repatriated. Poole offers sympathy and confirms locations of blueprints and custody by Navy and consulate staff.
