The article recalls the life of Daniel Drew born July 20, 1797 in Carmel New York. It notes his early schooling and farm work and his rise in finance with Vanderbilt and Fisk. It details his role in Erie stock battles and his later decline and death in New York after heart disease.
The New York Sun recalls Charley Frazier, veteran engineer of the New York Lake Erie and Western railway, describing a ride on locomotive 309 toward Rutherford Park. He recalls a mile a minute as a figure of speech, noting trains rarely exceed thirty five miles per hour and that the idea of a mile a minute is a passenger fantasy. He recounts his youth racing a six foot wheel locomotive and reaching a true mile a minute only once, with bells and down grades, while noting later attempts fell short by seconds. He cautions readers not to take such claims seriously.
