Artificial fish breeding boosts Ohio lake fisheries

Dr Theodotus Garlic of Cleveland pioneered continental artificial fish breeding in 1853. The Ohio Legislature funded fish ways and hatching cases to improve fisheries, aiming to boost white fish production. White fish spawn in November, yielding up to twenty thousand fry per fish, with paddocks and streams used to protect young stock. The drive to farm and foster this food source grows, as white fish fetches three cents per fish and could become a staple.

Real Estate Speculation and Jumping in Leadville Town

In Leadville a fever of real estate speculation followed a claim of ownership under government patent. Town lots soared to high prices as fortunes were made before a period of “jumping” began, with squatters and would be buyers asserting claims. Cottagers resisted pressure, often arming themselves and telling intruders to leave.
