A Fremont girl, Rachel Lusher, 4, was struck by a bullet when an antique gun went off in a garage. The bullet tore through the wall into her chest, leaving her paralyzed from the breastbone down. She rides an electric wheelchair, attends a school for the handicapped, and remains hopeful and spirited as her mother cares for her daily.

Alameda finance chief pleads innocent in grand jury case
OAKLAND Fired Fremont schools finance chief Harald Alameda has pleaded innocent to felony charges connected to eight months of the Fremont school system financial affairs. The plea came Thursday with trial set for Sept. 23. He also seeks reinstatement in a civil action, which will wait until the criminal case is resolved.

BART trims furlough list. 28 kept on staff
