Herbert Hoover Jr. former Undersecretary of State and son of the late president died in Pasadena after a brief illness. He served as undersecretary from 1964, previously aiding Secretary Dulles in Middle East affairs. Survived by Margaret, Herbert III, two daughters, and brother Alan. Funeral at All Saints Episcopal Church will be private.

Egyptian special forces stormed the Port Tewfik area near Suez City in a brief clash, destroying five Israeli tanks and an artillery position. An Egyptian spokesman said troops held the post for about one hour, captured an Israeli soldier, and inflicted at least 40 casualties on the Israeli side. An Israeli spokesman reported casualties but did not confirm figures.
