Letters From Camp Merritt Describe A Soldier's Voyage To France

A letter from W. Thompson to Mrs. Horlock recalls boarding a transport at Camp Merritt, rough seas, crowded bunks, and spare moments with boxing and music aboard. He notes French civilians, German prisoners, scarce wood, cold damp bunks, and looming shovel and pick work as the unit nears combat.

Bank Building Erected by Monrovia Contractor

W H McCune of Monrovia buys the site opposite Frank McCoy's store to build a two story structure for the First National Bank of Arcadia. Construction aims for completion in 60 days at about 10000 dollars with a vault and money safe costing around 2500 dollars. 910000 Club At Balloon School

Special trains unload soldiers at the balloon camp in Arcadia. About 600 men will be encamped by tonight with balloons expected to fly within a week. The Pasadena Red Cross and Army Navy League plan a $10000 clubhouse and a batt le house as tenting and construction expand.

Supreme Court Judge Thomas J. Lennon of San Francisco, a presiding justice at the state court of appeal, declares his candidacy for the August primaries for associate justice of the supreme court. He was admitted to the bar at 21, practiced 14 years in San Francisco, served eight years as Marin superior court judge, and eight years as presiding judge of the first district of appeal.

Pasadena Arcadia Balloon Route Starts New Stage Line

The Pasadena-Arcadia line began operating cars on Friday using Cadillacs. The company plans regular scheduled services and will run cars on a steady timetable.

Pasadena Red Cross funds bathhouse and league builds camp clubhouse

Lieut. Col. W. N. Hensley Jr. announced that Pasadena Red Cross allocated 2035 dollars for a camp bathhouse while the Army Navy League plans a 10000 dollar clubhouse and canteen for men and officers. The league and Red Cross will move at once as camp work continues with barracks and other buildings underway.

Joy party ends in Arcadia as trio jailed for intoxication

In Arcadia a joy party ended with the arrest of O. B. Olles and Mrs. Alice Biggins of Los Angeles and Mrs. Ella Sherman of Monrovia by City Marshal Treen. A later inquiry found three quart bottles in their car. Judge Horlock fined Olles $20 and released the women with a severe reprimand.

Y M C A Balloon School Center Attracts Camp Boys

The Y M C A hut serves as the balloon school center with temporary quarters ahead of a new building. Miss McDonald, Miss Spanggil, and an Los Angeles organist entertained 350 boys with a 7 to 7 45 pm musical program, followed by a motion picture. Tonight Wallace Reid in Big Timber shown. Two soldier boys volunteer as motion picture operators. Pasadena camp library collects 6000 books. Col Hensley to send a truck when needed. The boys buy stamps and post cards, while stationery is free.

Old-Time Social and Strawberry Festival Hosted by Co operative Arcadian Club

The Co operative Arcadian club ladies hosted a straw berry festival and old-time social at Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Millard home last Saturday. Six present joined a spelling contest while shadow pictures of members and husbands were displayed for guessing. Mrs Sumwald won a prize for perfect guesses as music and songs filled the evening. About 50 people attended and enjoyed strawberry short cake and coffee.

Hensley to occupy Kane villa this summer Arcadia site

Lieut. Col. W N Hensley Jr commandant of the Arcadia balloon school will stay in Edward H Kane villa this summer while quarters are built. Kane to be away. home will serve as Colonel Hensley’s quarters. Mr and Mrs Holmes move into Bartelena home on Second avenue.

Arcadia to seek water bond for expansion

Arcadia officials consider a water bond issue likely exceeding 25 000 dollars to extend supply. A Wednesday adjourned meeting reviewed emergency needs as current wells and a 16 inch main limit delivery. City Engineer Gierlich will finalize exact requirements and potential irrigation and domestic demands.

City Hall Dedication Plans Announced for July Fourth

Plans are under way for a musical feast and celebration on July 4 to formally open the new city hall. W D Millard leads the affair with details to follow. Hardwood flooring is down on the second story and finishing touches are being added. New furniture and a separate desk for each board member will be supplied. The hall is described as one of the handsomest in the San Gabriel valley.

Promoted Chief Surgeon at U S Army Camp Yountville

Dr. C B Caldwell promoted to chief surgeon at the U S Army camp in Yountville Napa County Cal. He was named major in the medical corps a month earlier and now holds the top surgical post in the camp.
