Schools Close Friday for Christmas Break

Schools close for Christmas vacation and will reopen on December 31 with New Year’s Day off. Teachers attend institute in Los Angeles from the 17th to 21st. County Superintendent Keppel warns boards no continuous dismissal before New Year per law, causing a holiday gap for students.

City to spend 5481 for Arcadia water flow project

City Engineer Gier lich filed an estimate with the trustees showing about 5481.92 to pump water from the Arcadia weirs for Grand View irrigation. Requests came from Mr. Miller, Mr. Sebree, and Mr. Binker. A special meeting will set plans to advertise for bids for an eight inch pipeline from the wells.

Evans Tops List for Army Commission Training at Fort Monroe

Arthur Evans son of Mr and Mrs H J Evans topped the competitive exam at Fort McArthur and will proceed to Fort Monroe Virginia for regular army officer training. Gordon Maddock also earns a place to join Evans. Dr H M Roth returned Friday from San Diego.

Christmas Exercises at church Sunday School program

On December 23 the Sunday School will present a Christmas program at the church. The event promises a pleasing entertainment and all are invited. Candy and nuts offerings will be halved as the country conserves, but every child will receive a half pound of candy an apple and some nuts for a merry time.

The mission bell replaces the California poppy on 1918 motor license plate discs. Motorists pay the next year’s license fees to receive the numbered discs tied to their enamel tags. California’s permanent tag system enters its third year, changing only disc designs rather than annual plates.

Arcadians Form Roster At Sunday School Convention

At the annual Sunday school convention held Tuesday at the First Methodist Episcopal church in Monrovia Arcadia and Duarte delegates attended. Officers elected for the coming year include President M. G. Boynton and Vice President Chas Stewart Arcadia. Sewing Circle to Meet for Red Cross Project

The sewing circle will meet at 1 o'clock next Wednesday with Mrs. Tontz on Eighth Avenue to sew for the Red Cross. It is urged that as many ladies as possible attend for a busy afternoon of work.

Preparations for occupying the new Presbyterian church progress with a three-member committee buying carpeting and pulpit chairs. Five art windows are promised by parishioners and friends, including dedications to Ruth Emer son and the late Rev. Dr. Gage. The Ladies Aid bazaar raised 76.50, with other sales adding funds for a church bell and carpet.

Red Cross Workers in Santa Anita Ring Up Recording Year

Santa Anita Red Cross volunteers report a record effort with $300 in treasury and a lengthy tally of donated items. Convalescent robes and hospital shirts lead the list with pajamas, house uniforms, handkerchiefs, slippers, comfort pillows, and various sewing pieces. Officers include President Charles Pike, Secretary Douglas Coughran, and Treasurer Mrs. R. B. Hosford with Mrs. E. T. Fletcher overseeing operations.

Quarantine Lifts After Diphtheria Outbreak Recovered

The quarantine on two Mexican families was lifted Thursday as all members recovered and danger abated. Arrangements were made to lift the quarantine at Al Moris's home either yesterday or today.

Red Cross Donations Recorded By Mrs Billings

In November donations totaling 15.50 were received for the Red Cross by Mrs C A Billings. Contributions include fourteen yards of unbleached muslin from Mrs Eva Emerson. Mrs Billings thanks contributors and notes all day weekly meetings at her Santa Anita avenue home open to helpers.

Two New Homes Building in Arcadia

Two houses under construction in Arcadia are being built by men from Los Angeles. Am brose Lauer is constructing a room bungalow with a garage on the east side of Sixth avenue. G. G. Mead is building a house on Second avenue for his current home and plans to erect another later, using the present structure as a garage.

Duarte Helping Hand Christmas Tree Draws Local Support

The Duarte Helping Hand club of eighteen women will run a Christmas tree at the Duarte schoolhouse at 3 PM to distribute toys and candy to poor schoolchildren and nearby kids. Edmond Edwards will portray Santa Claus delivering gifts. the event includes a child program and a Christmas dinner delivery to a needy Duarte family.

D W Sims to Speak at Knights of Pythias Opening

D W Sims of Arcadia will be principal speaker at the Knights of Pythias lodge and club rooms opening event at 22144 South Myrtle Avenues. The ceremony includes contributions from Pasadena Star-News writer Arthur Wyatt, Mr and Mrs Ward Kelly, and Leo McCleary, with Jennie Baldwin’s jazz band likely to perform. The Arcadia post office will be open from 8 to 9 30 Sunday morning to allow people to collect mail, announced by post mistress Miss Wilson. The office will be closed Christmas Day.

Riverside Dean Prods Farm Bureau Center Plan In Duarte

Dean H J Webber of the Riverside experiment station addressed about 50 ranchers in Duarte urging unity among Duarte Arcadia and Monrovia to form a county farm bureau center in Los Angeles. He said enrollment reached about 1600 with 571 from Los Angeles meeting plus Japanese members totaling over 2000. A Los Angeles county farm adviser and five specialists are planned with citrus walnut poultry and general husbandry expertise. A new committee led by C O Peterson E T Richardson W P Elliott J W Blain and Harold Jackson will organize the drive to secure the center and a follow up Los Angeles meeting will set dates for delegates.

At a special meeting Wednesday night Arcadia trustees signed and delivered the contract for the new city hall. Contractor Mr. Dawson plans to commence work immediately.

County Exams Set For Hospital Nurse And Truck Driver

The Los Angeles county civil service commission will hold an examination on December 20 for head surgical nurse at the county hospital with a salary of 85 dollars per month plus full maintenance. A second exam on December 21 offers a motor truck driver position at 90 dollars per month.

Rodriguez Bound Over on Assault with Intent to Kill

Ysabel Rodriguez, a Mexican boy, shot E Okazaki, a well known Japanese rancher, two weeks ago. He was bound over to the Superior court by Judge Burr on the assault with intent to kill charge. His bail fixed at 2000 dollars. lacking funds, he was jailed.
