Arcadia awards contract for new city hall

Arcadia grants the city hall contract to James Dawson of Los Angeles for 5935 dollars in rough construction bids. The vote also finalizes the First and Fallingleaf site purchase for 1600 dollars with a 25 percent bond backing. City trustees consider facing the building on First avenue for a better approach.

Birthday Party Honors Husband With Leather Gift

Mrs Millard hosted a birthday party for her husband on Third Avenue with sixteen guests. Progressive pedro provided entertainment while cake and coffee were served. The host presented Mr Millard a leather chair as a gift. Domestic Science Setup At First Avenue School

Equipment for instruction in domestic science has been installed at the First Avenue school. Tanks gas plates and utensils to serve about twelve students are provided. Miss Matteson and Miss Ward will supervise the class which will cover all branches of cookery, aiming to develop into an interesting and attractive part of the school curriculum.

Dentists Hold First School Dental Clinic for Students

Monrovia dentists conducted the city’s first school dental clinic for high school students yesterday. Ten minute examinations were performed by nearly all city dentists, and only two students had previous dental checkups in the past year.

City Trustees Consider Zoning Rule for Livestock Proximity

Marshal Treen urged an ordinance limiting how close housing cattle horses swine and other animals may be to residences. He warned that in parts of the city there is too close a mix of people and animals and cleanliness and health cannot be safeguarded. Trustees smiled and did not act.

Governor Stephens Citing Return North Delays Arcadia Visit

Governor Stephens cannot travel to Arcadia to speak now as he prepares to return north for six weeks. He may visit Arcadia later in the Southern state trip when feasible, though Christmas activities and Red Cross work will occupy the next weeks. His secretary conveyed the message to Charles W. Free stove wood offered from dead eucalyptus trees

Santa Anita Avenue hosts six or more large dead eucalyptus trees. The city trustees will hand them to individuals who will cut and remove the trees under the street superintendent. Possession requires root removal and debris cleanup. The trees were originally planted by Lucky Baldwin and would provide excellent stove wood.

Old Prospector Bartoldo Dies in San Gabriel Canyon

Italian prospector Bartoldo, 72, who lived for more than four decades in a canyon above Fellows Camp, died Friday after being brought to County Hospital from his remote home. He spent years prospecting the San Gabriel River for gold, living quietly among fruit trees and gardens in a secluded cove five miles above Fellows' Camp.

Picnic Tables Placed for Motoring Lunchers in Arcadia

Two picnic tables have been erected near the new fountain at Santa Anita avenue and Huntington Drive in Arcadia by City Marshal Treen. They are for motorists passing through the city who wish to spread their lunch.

Church Bazaar At BibaUbleton Proves Successful

The church bazaar in BibaUbleton held Thursday and Friday drew strong support. Booths like outing flannel fancy work and candy sold well while about fifty dined at a large church dinner. 35 cent contributions flowed steadily and total receipts will be announced later.

Women’s Club gift to Yuletide fund proposed

The Woman's Club had $19.57 left and proposed sending it to the Los Angeles Yuletide fund for Arcadia boys in the army. The idea was read at a Wednesday night city trustees meeting. trustees left the decision to the Board of Trade, with no action taken.

Quit Municipal Gardens Monrovia Shrinks Yard Crops

Monrovia will not maintain municipal vegetable gardens next year as crops this year failed to yield enough to satisfy gardeners. Beans were a total loss with no insurance. Costs recovered include about 8.75 dollars from potatoes with potential total returns of 40 to 50 dollars.

Brennan’s Team in Battle for San Gabriel Valley Title

The South Pasadena and Santa Monica football teams meet at Wilson Field to decide the valley championship. Santa Monica coach Voyle Brennan previously led Monrovia and built a strong squad that beat Redondo, San Pedro, Gardena, Venice, Compton, and Inglewood to win the title.

The Arcadia post office received the first consignment of new thrift stamps and war-savings certificates to be sold at the post office branches banks and local businesses. Thrift stamps cost 25 cents each are non-interest bearing and can be saved toward war-savings certificates costing 4.12 in December. Certificates are interest bearing redeemable on ten days notice and may be bought outright or via thrift stamps. the program aims to raise two billion dollars in 1917-1918 with per person average of 16.50.

Arcadia reports taxes due with early payments totaling 1593.24 between November 12 and 24 at city hall. Taxes delinquent after December 31. Year 1915 16 total collections reach 26538 with figures from city records.

Dog Poisoning Bandit Strikes Arcadia

The so called dog poisoning bandit is blamed for poisoning dogs over the past two weeks in Arcadia. Arsenic is reported as the poison, causing severe suffering before death. Several residents, including W. D. Millard, Theo Christiansen, H. R. Tripp, Fred Williams, Cliff Kent and Mr. Sperling, report losses while Marshal Treen investigates and vows swift action.

Governor Stephens spoke to the Associated Chambers of Commerce in El Monte about California war conditions. Attendees praised the talk. An investigation found no excess water. the city withdrew its application to Mrs. Stocker. BE. A. Miller and Mr. Bleaker requested more supply, and City Engineer Gierlich will survey the ground with them early next week to assess possible increases.

Food administration sets load rules for fruit car shipments

Shippers of oranges and lemons must load refrigerator cars seven boxes wide and two high along the entire length under a Food Administration regulation effective December 1. Regulations on vegetables and deciduous fruits will follow after safety limits are set. The Arden Dairy near El Monte, founded by E. F. Robbins, has been sold to Imperial Dairy, led by principal owner J. H. Hill. The sale price is not disclosed but reportedly far above $200,000. Hill plans remodeling the main residence for himself and family.

Draft Questionnaires To Be Mailed To Draft-Age Men

Beginning December 15 mailing of the draft age questionnaires will start. The pamphlet contains many questions for each man to answer and he may claim the classification he believes he deserves. Exemption officials will review the answers to determine class entitlement with single men placed in Class No 1 and married men with dependents in Class No 4. After December 15 no man may enlist and all will await draft into the national army.
