City Trustees Push Taxes to 1.60 for Budget Year

The board plans a 1.60 total levy including 1.00 general fund 0.21 water bond 0.33 road bond and 0.06 publicity. A 14,000 street remake dominates unusual expenditures while Millard opposes immediate tax rise favoring a bond issue. Water rates will rise as the municipal plant shows deficits. Arcadia Balloon School Described In Government Film

Glendora Gleaner recounts Arcadia balloon school training with 2000 cadets. Government film titled Wershing's Crusaders documents mobilization from recruitment to front lines, including pilots, observers, and firsts in American artillery and trench action. A topsy festival of war effort is shown with ships, planes, and munitions, and a September opening planned for enlisted mens' clubhouse.

Masquerade Ball Gossip Opens Monthly Social Series

The Cooperative Arcadian Club announces a monthly City Hall dance series starting Tuesday August 27 with a masquerade event. Admission is 25 cents and music will be provided for all attendees.

Sierra Madre to Supply Water for Arcadia Balloon School

An agreement this week has Sierra Madre provide water for Arcadia’s balloon school until Arcadia can boost local production. Arcadia currently uses all available water and cannot expect relief until a new well main is completed. The government will reimburse Sierra Madre for water used.

Masons Celebrate Annual Event at Eagle Rock Park

Masons in Los Angeles County plan a Saturday event at Eagle Rock Park on August 24 from 2 p.m. with sports for all ages, a moving picture, dancing, and a concert by the Jinnistan Grotto band under W. T. Osterholt. The gathering is hosted by Jinnistan Grotto No. 76 M O V P E R, inviting families to bring picnics while coffee lemonade and other items are supplied.

Motor fines imposed for speeding and lights violations

Judge Horlock fines motorists for speed and running without lights. Names and amounts include J E Crew five dollars for 38 miles, C Bluett five dollars for 40 miles, J F Brock five dollars for 35 miles, and many others from Los Angeles to Monrovia. Several suspend fines. Library hours updated by city librarian Evelyn Grimes with new Monday Wednesday and Saturday windows.

First National Bank of Arcadia will elect additional directors at its January annual meeting. Serving until then are John H. Bartle D W Simms W A Chess Thos Feron A L Parker and W H Horlock. Fixtures and safe have arrived and the bank plans to open September 3.

Gig Carnival and Ball at Angadia in Arcadia

A swimming carnival and ball open the Enlisted Men's Club at the Pasadena Community War Camp site near Arcadia's swimming pool on Saturday August 21. Lieut Dunlap Clark announces a meet between balloon camp lifters and Submarine Base San Pedro swimmers with noted Pacific Coast divers and swimmers performing. Proceeds fund furnishings for the new club house with attendees invited from Pasadena Arcadia Monrovia and nearby areas.

Primaries Loom In Ninth District Race And County contests

Voters open 6 am to 7 pm next Tuesday at Arcadia City Hall. The Ninth District leads a five angled congressional race as Randall seeks nominating tickets before Europe. In county posts Hamilton battles Cogswell for supervisor while Matthews presses. governor race draws little local activity.

Brother in Jail Becomes Moment of Reunion

Miguel Carrone a Mexican laborer at the P. E. camp jailed by Marshal Treen on a Thursday night recognized his countryman in a city jail cell and exclaimed Me brudder as Ramon Carrone, held minutes earlier, arrived drunk. Judge Horlock fined both five dollars.

Al Jennings to Speak at Liberty Gospel Services

Al Jennings the converted bandit will be principal speaker at Liberty Gospel Services Sunday evening at First Presbyterian church. The program promises good singing and spirited talks and includes a C. E. meeting at seven led by H. N. Graybill, a balloon school attendee. All young people are urged to attend.

Outpost Theatre Reopens Sunday With Free Show

The Outpost theater will open next Sunday featuring Claws of the Hun with Charles Ray. Owner Mrs Ruth Cassil says the theater will be open free to all, as a city ordinance against Sunday films awaits a 30 day effective period. King George’s actions for American soldiers are noted including decoration praise and shared humor.

Old Folks Picnic Set for Sycamore Grove in Los Angeles

A jolly old folks picnic for residents over 70 is planned for Saturday September 7 at Sycamore Grove Los Angeles. The event runs all day with a basket lunch at noon. attendees bring a basket with cup and spoon while cream coffee and sugar are supplied. A delightful time is expected.

Young Men Ordered to Enroll for War Service

Government orders all men who have turned twenty one since June 5 to appear at their local draft board on Saturday August 24 and enroll for war service. The mandate applies across all sections and must be strictly observed.
