Deserters Captured in Sacramento After Battle With Guards

Ralph C. Rogers and Grant Hurley, balloon camp fugitives from Arcadia, were found in Sacramento and are in federal custody. Their court martial likely will convene there. Earlier reports noted searches in El Monte and Pomona after the pair fled the camp last Friday, stealing clothing and a small bank fund, and attempting to steal an automobile.

Judge’s leniency on speeders noted in small weekly list

Fewer speeders are fined this week under Judge Horlock. Names include J. A. Irving from Hollywood fined $5.00, BE. F. Hobert of South Pasadena $5.00, and F. M. DuMond of Monrovia $2.00. Water for the army balloon school on Stocke property on Foothill Boulevard will be supplied by Sierra Madre under contract, correcting a prior erroneous report.

Mend Clothes for Boys Red Cross Opens at City Hall

The Red Cross in Arcadia will open a mending center at the city hall starting September 3. Volunteers are urged to cut home duties and help the effort, with mending especially requested for balloon school boys. Salvaged items can be left at the First Avenue schoolhouse basement or with Mrs. Henderson on Keith Avenue for collection.

First National Bank of Arcadia to Open Next Tuesday

Arrangements are under way to open the First National Bank of Arcadia for business Tuesday morning September 3. Authorization from the Washington comptroller is awaited but expected in time, with capital stock paid and a surplus in place. Injured Woman From Fresno Hurt in Arcadia Car Crash

Mrs. Beaver of Alhambra was thrown from a car carrying Douglas family grandchildren in Arcadia last Wednesday. Her left arm was badly broken as they turned a corner near the balloon camp. E K Bean and a nurse transported her to a local hospital.

Waterman Home Leased to Army Officer's Mother

Mr and Mrs Henry Waterman leased their Highway Square home for a year to Mrs Dunn mother of Corporal Dunn from the army balloon school at Arcadia. They will move into a three room bungalow in Concord Place and take possession September 1.

Wisconsin State Picnic Draws Monrovia Residents

Many former Wisconsin residents living in Monrovia and nearby plan to attend the Wisconsin state picnic on Saturday August 31 at Sycamore Park in Los Angeles. The all day event features a music program and greetings from Badger state speakers in the afternoon with coffee served to badge holders. The Monrovia High School gym near Monrovia Field is being remodeled with new showers to improve facilities for boys.

Voters in Arcadia cast under 30 percent of registered ballots as still counts proceed. Community efforts culminate in the Arcadia soldiers clubhouse dedication with a swimming meet and a 9 pm dance to fund furnishings. notable locals include Cameron Coffey and Aileen Allen.

Arcadia Garage Change Hands

Max A. Ireland sold his Arcadia garage to C. Chilver and W. Schrader who took possession Thursday. The new owners bring experience and promise first class work in Arcadia. Ireland suffered an eye injury six months ago and is forced to exit the business until his sight returns. Chilver built a home in Arcadian Acres near H. R. Schwarzkopf.
