A European merchant reports dire conditions in Monastir vilayet with Turkish troops committing abuses against Christians. Homes, shops, and churches are deserted as fear of massacre grows. estimates place over 70,000 people starving in the fields without shelter.
In the city courthouse today the Calhoun county teachers convene a large meeting presided over by County Superintendent H. T. Persons. The session began at 10 oclock with many subjects of importance to teaching to be discussed, and it will continue through tomorrow.
Mr. Emmett Summers and Miss Lela Brown were married at the bride’s parents home at Seventeenth street and Stephens avenue. Rev. R. E. Henderlite of the Second Presbyterian church officiated. The couple, both popular, receive broad good wishes for their future.
At the Anniston lodge 1189 meeting Frank Leigh was elected secretary to succeed Joe Markstein who resigned. Leigh was chosen unanimously and is described as faithful careful and efficient by the lodge’s members.
Joseph T. Fanning announced the Elks will appoint committee personnel in Indianapolis. Mead D. Detwiler of Harrisburg was named three year governor of the Elks National Home at Bedford Virginia, and Thomas F. McNulty of Baltimore was named two year governor. A one year governor remains to be chosen. The board of governors will meet Grand Trustees in late September to decide management matters.
City council rejected creating a street for the alley between Tenth and Eleventh streets and refused malt liquor licenses there, citing lack of development as a business thoroughfare and potential legal issues. The meeting also elected two Ward 5 school board members, reappointed three board members, granted Kilby Locomotive and Machine Works a five year tax exemption, and referred a cemetery petition to the cemetery committee.

The house committee on temperance in Montgomery voted to return an adverse report on the Verner bill which would allow counties to decide via election whether to operate dispensaries. About seventy five spectators attended as lawmakers debated with supporters including B. Verner Moody Rabb and opponents such as Blackburn Huffman Hall. The committee's unanimous vote excludes the chairman who did not vote, and Birmingham delegates attended to oppose the measure.
The bill establishing a dispensary in the town of Piedmont passed the senate yesterday afternoon with little opposition. It is believed to become law. All aboard for St. Louis.
Birmingham September 11 General Manager Duncan of the Southern China and Foundry company says efforts are underway to quickly straighten affairs and restart the Anniston Memphis and Lenoir City plants. The car building division will reopen first with at least six hundred workers and payrolls will be paid as due. He expects all plants to be in operation by week’s end or sooner with 2000 to 2500 workers once fully running and seeks a permanent continuation of business.
Hons. John B. Knox T. W. Coleman Capt. W. H. McKleroy L. T. Smith A. H. Shepperd Arch Henderson and D. W. Fleming of the Highland Golf Club left for Atlanta to face the Capital City Golf Club in two two round contests. Four rounds are scheduled with two played tomorrow morning and two tomorrow afternoon.
A Montgomery dispatch to The Star states the Calhoun court consolidation bill does not affect the county court. Only the circuit and city courts are included, to be unified under a single court with one set of officials.
