Father Francis Wernz elected general secretary of the Jesuit order, succeeding the late Father Martin. The German delegates pushed the choice at the conference, with 42 of 81 votes. Wernz, born 1842 in Rottweil Württemberg, has lived in Rome since 1886.
State fair in Topeka ready to open Monday with full exhibits across departments. The racing program is touted as the best ever offered in Kansas, promising a strong opening week and standout competition.
New York travelers flock to Travers Island for the national Amateur Athletic Union meet today and tomorrow. The West shows strong with Chicago and St Louis entries, including Barker the Australian in several events. Canadian Kerr and Peter Deer are listed, while Dan Kelly of Oregon cannot join this trip east.
Mr. Fred A. Wicks departs for Birmingham with Mr. P. A. Swanburg and family, then on to Colorado for a new home. They have sold their dairy and farm interests. Wicks will travel east to Sweden, his old home, and plans to return to Anniston soon.
Seaboard engineers surveying the Jacksonville to city rail line have nearly finished. They are at Lloyds Gap three miles north, where they have camped. The survey is directed by J A Gaboury and Y E McBee with Birmingham headquarters and Jacksonville temporary offices. Construction will start soon after the survey, with a near term regular schedule expected.
