Two thousand persons killed on Martinique as Mont Pelee volcano erupts. Hospitals overwhelmed with injured. rescue efforts hampered as the island faces possible destruction and widespread chaos.
A latest eruption on Martinique is said to have killed more than two thousand people. Survivors flee the island as authorities monitor for a possible tidal wave if the volcano collapses.
Reports from Castries and Paris detail violent detonations and a catastrophic eruption on Martinique. About two thousand people are said to have perished, with many island residents fleeing. Dispatches note similar sounds and ominous skies over nearby Guadeloupe and Pointe a Pitre.”
