Five confirmed dead with fears the toll could reach thirty in the Glucose Sugar Refining plant blaze on Taylor Street near the Chicago river. The fire started with an explosion in the seven story drying house, trapping workers on upper floors. only one body identified so far. An electrician among the missing is believed dead. Loss estimated at $500,000.
Judge Stickney presided at a police court matinee with Mayor Pro-Tem Stickney in attendance. Walter Gunn testified in a case against Jackson charged with profane language in front of women, related to a shooting of Walter Shell Saturday night. evidence was meagre and a decision was withheld. An Emerald Isle man faced drunk and disorderly charges and attempted to smuggle oil through jail bars. the vial was valued at 2.50 plus costs. Other defendants were fined after brief pleas, and a collection yielded about 50.00 for the city.
James H. Henderson a Maumee Ohio farmer aged 52 and his wife 50 walked 600 miles toward Fayette County Iowa aided only by 10 cents and charity. They reached Desplaines Street police station after getting lost in Chicago and were taken in by officers.

Walter Shell, an employee of the Southern Car and Foundry, was dangerously wounded by Walter Gunn at Gunn's home near Twenty third street about 11 o clock Saturday night. Gunn says Shell and a companion demanded admittance and opened fire as Gunn opened the door. Gunn returned fire with a double barrel shotgun, injuring Shell. Shell could not be interviewed due to condition.
Bids opened for a new two story business block on the northwest corner of Tenth and Market streets. The work will be done by day labor under J. T. Duke after rejecting all bids. The gray brick exterior will feature terra cotta and galvanized iron with mahogany and marble interiors. The first floor will house the Peerless saloon. second floor may host a cafe.
Richard Hone, a prominent pineapple grower living near Lake Worth, was shot and killed last night while seated at a table with his wife Mrs. Hone. Police believe robbery was the motive. a posse is tracking the assailant, with bloodhounds searched via telegrams to multiple points.
Hon. Wm. Vaughan a leading Republican spoke today in the circuit court room at noon in support of the state Republican ticket. He is described as a prominent speaker and able exponent of Republican principles. His remarks were well received by party members in attendance.
