Wreck of South Portland Leaves 31 Missing on Oregon Coast
The steamer South Portland from Astoria to San Francisco wrecked at Bandon in dense fog. Captain McIntyre and six others reached shore at Port Orford. 31 passengers and crew, including 14 passengers and 22 crew, are presumed lost. The vessel, 155 feet long, owned by W. A. Scammell, formerly The Caroline Nutter, carried 23 crew.

Will Gidley Dies in Saw Log Wagon Accident
Will Gidley, about twenty one, was killed early today when a wagon carrying logs tipped and crushed him, his chest and face were struck by logs. A fellow laborer found the body after the incident, which occurred in flat country noted on page 7.

Farm Hand From Ireland Saves $5200 After 32 Years
New York October 21 Patric Mahaney of Derby Connecticut saved $5200 from 32 years as a farm hand. Wages were about $12 a month and board. In 52 years he had three employers and took six days off. Expenditures totaled $4490, averaging under 12 cents a month. He says he can live comfortably and would never work again.
