Ross Blackmon, a young Anniston attorney, rode in a buggy when his horse grew suddenly ill. He hitched the horse to the rear, sat in the shafts and acted as horse for a mile, negotiating rocky roads and hills until a negro offered 83 to help pull to a farmhouse. The horse was doctored but died minutes later.
