A Thursday dawn fire at a four room cottage owned by Mrs. E L Tyler destroyed the residence and belongings. Miss Thompson, left in charge by her father, woke when a dog barked loudly warning of danger. She escaped with minor burns and singed hair as firefighters arrived after a long run.
Washington October 14. A telegram from the President confirms acceptance of Crane’s resignation as Chinese minister. Crane says he feels greatly relieved by the decision and steps down from his post.
Nearly one thousand delegates attended the fifteenth annual convention of the Ohio Valley Improvement Association in Cincinnati. Representatives from West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Indiana and Illinois are present, with Governor Harmon and several Congress members scheduled to speak over the two days. President John Vance of Columbus opened the session urging a Congressional appropriation to fund the nine foot stage project for the Ohio river from Pittsburg to Cairo.
Rochester marked its 75th birthday with a lavish display of flags in the business district and a special program of exercises at the ongoing industrial exposition in the city.
From Jacksonville reports today indicate C. D. Martin former county commissioner will continue to hold the duties of mayor after Mayor Wilkerson’s illness and funeral crowds fill the town. The late mayor is remembered fondly by county residents, with Camp Martin U W and the City Council joining students from the State Normal School in his funeral procession.
D W Sims, general secretary of the Alabama Sunday School Association, reports rising interest across the state. The association has operated for over 25 years, sending about seventy letters daily and distributing leaflets on Home Department, Teacher Training, Cradle Roll and Adult Bible Class. County conventions have expanded, with Talladega and Jefferson counties planning major events, and Coosa and Tallapoosa counties reporting record reach and activity led by local leaders such as Dr. B M Ohme.
Madrid Barcelona and other cities are under martial law after Ferrer’s execution. The palace is guarded by troops and grounds surrounded by soldiers to deter radicals seeking vengeance against King Alfonso. Paris and other capitals report protests at embassies. New York hosts a Labor Aid meeting to condemn the execution.

The Saunders Gilmore custody dispute over Annie Gordon Saunders ends with Chancellor Whiteside granting custody to grandfather J J Gilmore. Father C W Saunders gains weekly access for visits while no reflection on him is implied. Grandparents were represented by P F Wharton and Niel P Sterne. parents by Knox Acker Dixon and Blackmon.
Pittsburg on October 14 hosts forty five thousand Disciples of Christ at Forbes Field for the Lord's Supper closing the centennial declaration of restoration by Thomas Campbell. Five hundred deacons and one hundred elders will serve as thousands arrive on special trains to attend.
Floyd King former Louisiana congressman was acquitted in Virginia of stabbing William Martin. He claimed self defense and was cleared of the charge in court at Falls Church on October 14.

Noted members include Rev C W Parkhurst Senator Overman Judge J C Pritchard Gen B W Green Bishop Roberts Strange and Rabbi Simon.
Jacksonville October 14 news of the death of Hon. S. R. Wilkerson four terms as mayor. He suffered from stomach catarrh for weeks and passed Wednesday afternoon. Funeral Thursday at 1:30 led by Rev. Bateman. Civil War veteran and Camp J. B. Martin member. Survived by wife two sons and a daughter.
A Norwegian steamer Sterk went down near Moliven last night with twelve people drowned. The loss was reported from Christiana today.
New York October 14 The Missouri Kansas and Texas railroad bought by Edwin Hawley and B P Yoakum gives Hawley dominating strength. With addition of the K T to other Hawley controlled systems he now controls 4480 miles of railroad from Northwest wheat fields to the Gulf.
