A powerful hurricane strikes Havana sinking small boats and causing widespread damage with many trees down and potential loss of life. Warnings extend along the Atlantic coast from Florida to Charleston and Gulf from Mobile as the storm sweeps northward.
Announcement for a railroad reorganization merges the Mobile Jackson and Kansas City line with the Gulf and Chicago railway. The consolidation forecloses sales and forms the New Orleans, Mobile and Chicago Line, planned to extend to New Orleans.
The New York mayoral race begins in earnest withHearst and Gaynor set to address crowds. Hearst denies pledging support for Gaynor as mass meetings are held at Carnegie Hall and the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

In Lewistown Montana the Knights of Pythias Grand Lodge of Montana opens its annual meeting and the women’s auxiliary gathering. A welcome meeting and an electrical parade lead off three days of events with grand lodge sessions entertainment and competitive drills drawing hundreds of visitors.
Hon. W. B. Bowling defended the proposed constitutional amendment at a Saturday evening gathering in the court house. He attacked opponents’ tactics, argued for retaining prohibition measures, and cited liquor as a major crime factor. The speech, delivered to about 200 attendees, supported section 2 of the Jelks resolutions and warned against undermining prohibition. Continued on Fourth Page.
A lone bandit robbed the Great Northern Express Company office this morning in Shattle Wagh. He bound and gagged two men, escaping with several thousand dollars. The exact loss is undetermined and the bandit's identity and whereabouts remain unknown.
A grand estate once belonging to former Governor Sprague was destroyed by fire this morning. The blaze caused an estimated loss of 600000 with about half tied to costly statuary and art treasures. The eighty year old former governor was partly overcome by smoke.
Jack Holland, son of farmer M F Holland near Blue Mountain, is missing after leaving home last Wednesday. He is deaf and dumb, blind in one eye, about 25, tall and well built with dark hair. His father suspects foul play or a serious accident. no clues have emerged despite searches.
The opening full term shows an unusually busy docket with multiple railroad cases testing Interstate Commerce Commission powers. Key matters include Willamette Valley, Chicago and Alton against the ICC, and Illinois Central vs ICC. El Paso residents plan a petition urging Taft to seek Dias’s help to curb cross border racing and gambling. President Taft’s San Pedro arrival included harbor tours, fortifications site visit, and a Los Angeles banquet expected at the Auditorium.

Several hundred delegates attended the opening of the Polish National Alliance annual convention in Milwaukee. Religious services were held at St. Stanislaus church before the business sessions. The group aims to educate Poles about their homeland and help them secure political rights.
St Charles Missouri marks its centennial with a sunrise salute and visitors from both sides of the river. Governor Hadley will give an address as historical exercises, motor boat races, parades and athletic events highlight the week of celebrations.
Brigadier General Amos Kimball retired died here this morning of heart failure at age sixty nine. He had served in the army during his long career and was widely known in military circles.
New York October 1 Charles Morse lost his appeal from a fifteen year sentence at Atlanta Federal prison. The U S Court of Appeals affirmed the lower court ruling in his bank law violation trial. Morse may seek Supreme Court review on constitutional grounds. He showed bitter disappointment at the court action.
The final score was 8 to 6 with Pittsburg winning over Detroit. An estimated thirty thousand spectators expected as frosty damp conditions affected play at the world champion series game in Detroit.
In Indianapolis on October 11 the Panama libel case hearing began before Judge Anderson. Defendants Delavan Smith and Charles St Williams of Indianapolis may be moved to the District of Columbia for trial. The case stems from articles in the Indianapolis News about U S Panama canal property purchase and drew objections from Roosevelt Robinson Cromwell Taft and others.
