Oct 11 reports a terrific hurricane hitting Havana sinking many small crafts and causing extensive property damage with widespread debris and possible loss of life. Warnings were issued along the Atlantic coast from Florida to Charleston and Gulf points to Mobile.
Officials announced that the Mobile, Jackson and Kansas City railroad and the Gulf and Chicago railway have merged under a reorganization plan with foreclosure sales. The combined system will be named the New Orleans, Mobile and Chicago Line and extend to New Orleans.
The mayoral race in New York intensifies as Hearst and Gaynor launch their campaigns. Hearst denies pledging support for Gaynor as mass meetings begin at Carnegie Hall and the Brooklyn Academy of Music. The race is described as a whirlwind campaign.
The grand jury handed down nine indictments against men responsible for stealing the Independence League emblem at the last primaries. Bench warrants for their arrest have been issued.
In Lewistown Montana on October 11 the Knights of Pythias Grand Lodge of Montana begins its annual meeting with the women’s auxiliary. An electrical parade opens the program this evening, followed by grand lodge sessions and entertainment. Visitors from across the state attend as Lewistown boasts unprecedented decorations.
Hon. W. B. Bowling delivered a forceful address at the court house on the Montgomery resolutions and the question Do We Want More. He argued to preserve current prohibition and supported the constitutional amendment while denouncing opposition tactics as inconsistent and politically motivated. Continued on Fifth Page.
A lone banditBound and gagged two men in the Great Northern Express Company office in Seattle this morning. He escaped with several thousand dollars. The loss amount and perpetrator identity remain unknown.
The magnificent mansion of ex Governor Sprague was burned this morning at Narragansett Pier R I. The blaze caused about 600000 in loss, with much of it in statues and art treasures. The former governor, aged eighty, was partly overcome by smoke.
Jack Holland, son of farmer M F Holland near Blue Mountain, vanished last Wednesday. He is deaf and dumb and blind in one eye, about 25, tall and well built with dark hair. His father fears foul play or a fatal accident after he left while picking cotton, with no destination or word since.
Washington Oct 11 Numerous railroad cases test Interstate Commerce Commission powers and rates in Southern Pacific Oregon and California litigation. The Chicago livestock terminal charge case and Portland gateway dispute challenge terminal and through route rules. The tobacco trust and Standard Oil dissolution cases also await rulings.
The Massachusetts branch of the American Federation of Labor began its annual convention in Holyoke with delegates from major cities and towns. Sessions run several days as officers report a healthy federation with rising membership and various labor issues to be discussed.
The Latonia Jockey Club inaugurated its fall race meeting today in Cincinnati Ohio under favorable conditions. The meeting will run for twenty four days continuing through late October and into November.
A Soviali 1 mass meeting in Taft’s view denounced the president and nearly caused a riot before police dispersed leaders. El Paso residents plan to petition Taft to urge Diaz to curb cross border racing and gambling. Taft’s Los Angeles visit includes harbor tours, fortifications site, and a citywide holiday with a large Auditorium banquet anticipated.
President Taft arrives in Los Angeles after an all night ride from Fresno to begin a two day stay. A large crowd met him at the station and a committee of prominent citizens offered greetings. He toured central streets decorated in his honor en route to planned entertainments.
Several hundred delegates attend the opening sessions of the Polish National Alliance in Milwaukee. Religious services at St Stanislaus Church preceded the business meetings as the patriotic group focuses on educating Poles about their homeland and aiding their political rights.
St Charles Missouri marked its centennial with sunrise gun salutes and belts as hundreds gathered for the 100th anniversary celebration. Governor Hadley delivered an address while visitors witnessed elaborate decorations, historical events, motor boat races, parades, and various athletic activities planned for the week.
Brigadier General Amos Kimball retired and died in Washington D C this morning from heart failure. He was sixty nine years old.
New York Oct 11 Charles Morse lost his appeal from a fifteen year hard labor sentence in Atlanta Federal prison for banking law violations as the Federal court of appeals affirmed the lower court. Morse may seek Supreme Court review on constitutional grounds. He expressed bitter disappointment at the court action.
Detroit crowds expected for the world championship game today between Detroit and Pittsburg. Weather is damp and frosty, conditions unfriendly for top play. Betting remains seven to ten with Pittsburg favored.
The Panama libel case hearing opened in federal court with Delavan Smith and Charles R. Williams named defendants. The trial focus is whether they will be moved to the District of Columbia for trial over articles in the Indianapolis News regarding the U S Panama canal purchase. Named figures include Roosevelt Robinson Cromwell Taft and others.
Fans in Berlin await Gerhart Hauptmann as he prepares a public appearance next Sunday. He will read excerpts from a yet untitled new novel, with no details released about the title or contents.
