The war report notes mutinous unrest in German army and navy tied to Allied successes and food shortages. German artillery dominates around Passchendaele while British and French fronts shift, and Alsace Lorraine stance blocks peace talks. Reichstag debate resumes with Socialist involvement.
Instructions reveal a new course at Camp McClellan covering gas defense and use of gas as a weapon. Lieut Tillman will head the gas defense section with a gas house being built. All personnel will learn protection, mask use, gas cloud recognition, and shell designs, with timetable set by the War Department and brigade commanders.
More than three thousand sailors took part in a mutiny in the German navy late in August. Leaders plotted a revolution but the outbreak was checked by loyal sailors. Most affected war ships lay at Wilhelmshaven when the uprising occurred.
Winona Minn Oct 11 The Upper Mississippi River Improvement Association began its annual convention to discuss river transportation to meet wartime needs. Minnesota Wisconsin Illinois Iowa and Missouri officials attended along with representatives from major Mississippi cities between Minneapolis and St Louis. President Thomas Wilkinson spoke at the opening session as officers filed annual reports.
Philadelphia reports a nationwide plot to poison aviation students at the Princeton aviation school. A private is arrested and cyanide of potassium found in his room. Authorities believe the plan aimed to cripple aviation preparations by targeting students.
Letters from Arthur Harrison Jr and Sergeant Burrell Haynes describe acute sweater needs for Calhoun county soldiers in Mineola, New York. Local efforts accelerate to provide comfort kits as War Emergency Society outfits Alabama troops with sweaters, bags, soap, tobacco, mufflers and more before a larger intake.
Camp Gordon Ga October 11 a steady stream of men from Alabama Florida and Georgia will move out while troops from Massachusetts New York and Maryland move in. Drafted maps will fill vacancies in the national guard and fifteen thousand men are needed at Camp Wheeler.
Mayor L L Scarbrough was chosen by Herbert Hoover as Calhoun county food registration representative. A telegram from R M Hobbie confirmed the appointment. Scarbrough accepted and will begin work once forms arrive. The campaign aims to conserve food supplies through voluntary pledges and a systematic program with local business cooperation in Anniston and Calhoun county.
Birmingham dispatch reports Lieut. Gov. Kilby faulting Southern Railway and Alabama Power for not coordinating rail and transport to support Anniston's hosting of federal troops. He says Anniston will seek steam or electric transport, possibly by subscription, to meet the emergency. He cites the city adapting to housing 50 000 soldiers but cites the transport gap as the chief obstacle.
New York Giants defeat Chicago White Sox 5 to 0 at Polo Grounds in the fourth game of the world series. Pitchers were Schupp for New York and Faber for Chicago with umpiring by Klem Evans O Loughlin and Rigler. The crowd was small and conditions were ideal for baseball.
Representatives of Georgia railroads urged the Star Railroad Commission to suspend the Sunday freight ban during the war citing public safety military needs and patriotic service. They warned freight congestion could delay troop movements and transfer of military supplies as well as essential food and coal deliveries.
In Anniston residents voice resentment toward Alabama Power and Southern Railway over slow solutions to transport soldiers. They argue a private railroad line to the camp could be built if public utilities fulfill their duties, despite disagreements between the two giants on steam versus electric options.
With the fall election near, Dayton prepares for a nonpartisan bid to oust three Socialist candidates elected on a party platform. If all three Socialists win, they could enact the 1913 pledge to overthrow the city charter, giving them control of city government.
Washington Oct. 11 The government uses full power to address coal shortage with the first commandeer order issued by Coal Administrator Garfield. The Pennsylvania railroad will be supplied by bituminous producers on a pro rata basis to keep lines running.
